Great Writers Series: Start Ugly

~~ Isaiah 64:8 (NIV84) ~~  Yet, O Lord, you are our Father.  We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.

by Carley Cooper

It’s day seven of the 15 Habits of Great Writers challenge.  Just to recap for those new to this series, so far the habits we’ve talked about are: Declare, Believe, Initiate, Practice, Prepare and Steal.

Jeff Goins tells us that the next habit of great writers is to ‘Start Ugly’.  When I first read about this next habit and the assignment of ‘making it ugly first’, I had to laugh because my first thought was “Well it’s about time; a habit that I’m already very well skilled at!  What’s the next one?”  Jeff says “All creation comes from chaos.  All works of art begin as splotches of paint on a canvas.  It’s never beautiful at first.  Before your work can reach its potential, it will first have to be bad.”

Everything I’ve ever written starts out ugly.  If that’s the sign of a great writer, I’m off to a good start.  Each time I get a first draft done and think to myself “This one is sooooo very much a lost cause.  Toss this one into the waste paper basket now.  Let it die a quiet and peaceful death.  Don’t let it suffer by keeping it alive.”  But, each time I have to follow my stubborn instincts and keep trying to improve on it.  The idea of quitting is a thought that just makes me crazy.  It’s like a beast that I have to conquer just so I can say “Ha.  I knew I could do it.  I told you so!”  By the time a work is finished; it turns out to be a creation that I didn’t know I had in me to write.  Many times when I am done it is a whole different creature than what I had started out to construct.  I always pray and ask God to lead me in my writing; to use me to write a great message that can touch others and bless them.  Each time, I complete a work and I see how it turned out; how well the thought process flows, and the logic behind it my first thought always is “Wow, this is incredible Lord.  I wish I would have thought of it.  I could have written something like this myself.”  But wait!  I just did.  And, I guess that’s the point of starting out ugly.  When the final polish is applied, the end product is exciting; and accomplishment is something to be proud of.

Quite often, when I am in a depression episode, I have gone back to read things I have written in the past.  Reading the feedback that I received helps to inspire me; to remind me of how God is using me to bless others.  This, in turn, blesses me.  I have often forgotten lesson’s that I’ve learned and written about.  As I reread journals, stories, and blogs I wrote I am reminded of the lessons I was taught with them at the time.  I get re-motivated by my own work.  It’s as though I’m seeing it for the first time, again.  Again, I am reminded how much God loves me.  He never gives up on me, even though He has plenty of just cause to do that if He should choose to.  Each time that He uses my own words to remind me of the lesson learned, there is just a little more of an improvement than there was the first time around.  He guides me to make a work that can help others, and then uses it to help me too.  He helps me write pieces that start out as something ugly.  With each series of revisions it is being molded to be something more beautiful... just as He is doing with my heart and my life.  Slowly I’m becoming the person He wants me to be; beautiful just like Jesus.

~~ Dear God ~~  Thank You for each revision that You make in my life, and in my work.  I started out ugly, but slowly I am becoming a beautiful work of art.  Please use me to bless others, and to show Your glory always.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Job Qualifications

~~ Ephesians 2:10 (NASB) ~~  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

I went to a small business college, and I graduated with a diploma that, at the time, qualified me to be a Computer Programmer and an entry level Accountant; topped off with some business courses.  After I graduated I had a very hard time finding a job.  For a very long time I heard the same old thing from every potential employer “Sorry, but you don’t have experience.  Come back when you’ve have some experience.”  Not one of them, though, told me how I was supposed to get experience without being hired somewhere

So, what job did I finally get?!  I’m glad you asked.  I ended up working at a job that I was over qualified for; Mary Brown’s Fried Chicken, in St.John’s, Newfoundland, as a kitchen / counter worker.  I don’t even know if the job actually had a title.  It was not at all what I had dreamed about, but it helped pay the rent on my first apartment.  A few years later, I finally did get a great office job that I loved; after I moved to Barrie, Ontario.  It happened to be with The Salvation Army; a Christian charitable organization, so I felt that I had an even bigger purpose than just enjoying the work.  I loved it so much that a big chuck of my time there were extra hours as a volunteer, and it didn’t even occur to me to mind that I didn’t get paid for so many extra hours.

Then, life took a big unexpected turn.  I was in a nasty car accident that turned my life upside down and left me in physiotherapy for two years.  It was a six-car pileup on an icy Ontario highway.  My injuries lead to other health issues, and eventually, I had to leave my job.  Around that same time my marriage ended.  My health issues got worse; and the end result is that I’ve only had work-at-home jobs since (either helping to run a business, or doing something creative).  I’ve technically been out of the workforce for a long time now.  Though, I still have health issues, I would love to get back into it.  I don’t want to sacrifice my writing for it, but the problem is that now I feel under qualified for anything and everything.  I did get some further education in more recent years, but even still, my education is way out of date, and I don’t have recent experience.  That is, outside of a volunteer job that I do one day per week at the church office.  I figure that no one in any industry that I would want to work for would take me seriously, let alone take a chance on hiring me.

It is the same feeling that I get when I think about being called to work for God.  I don’t feel qualified.  I don’t even feel like I’m taken seriously by those around me let alone hope to get a ministry; or a position, where I could lead someone to Christ or to discipleship.   I’ve made so many mistakes in life; committed so many bad sins.  Most of the time I don’t even feel qualified for an entry level position, let alone to be have a dream career!

The other day someone left a comment that said “Carley, As usual another AWESOME Blog.  It seems as though you have become my Spiritual Life Coach.  What would I ever do without you?  Blessings my friend.”.

Another person left a comment on one of my other blog sites that said “Carley... You are the best blogger ever!!  You are smart and funny!  I just found your blogs and can't wait to read the rest... Thank you.”

I replied with a thank you and telling the people how much it meant to me and how honored I was to receive such compliments.  It humbled me more than I can say.  I know that in God’s eyes, humility like that is a very good thing.  However, it makes me feel a little confused as well.  Sometimes even a little dishonest.  That’s because the truth is, that most days I feel like I’m treading water and sinking fast.  How could I coach anyone when I don’t know what I’m doing myself?  I can’t imagine that I am the ‘best ever’ anything.  Well, except the best Carley; but that could potentially lead me to a whole series of other thoughts and questions, which I’ll leave for another blog.  There are those that have way more education, experience, intelligence; and a better relationship with God than I do who aren’t the best ever.  I have no clue where I’m supposed to be in life, or what direction I’m supposed to go in.  I feel like I’m probably the only one who’s still so lost at this late date in my life.  Most people I know seemed to have figured out so much at an early age.  Why haven’t I?  Where did I get lost?  The only things I know about myself with much certainty are that I have some sort of a gift in written words, that my heart desperately aches every day for a relationship, and that I do feel vastly different from the rest of the planet (which traces back to my Social Anxiety and Bipolar Disorders).

Each and every one of us is called to the job of spreading the gospel (Mark 16:15 NIV84), and to create disciples for Jesus (Matthew 28:19 NIV1984).  As unsure I am of my own qualifications; I know that God doesn’t see me as being incapable.  I love Him, and I want more than anything for my heart to be like Jesus; the way God wants it to be.  I’m willing to let Him change me; even though it’s hard.  The bible is filled with characters that were inexperienced, sinful, and even willingly ran from their calling.  However, God chose them to do the job anyway.  He loved them nevertheless.  We don’t need prior experience, or knowledge; before He is willing to hire us.  You see, He not only has already planned and prepared our jobs for us, but He provides us with on the job training.  I really want this job.  How about you?  The benefit package is out of this world!

~~ Dear God ~~  Thank You so much for creating a job position especially for me.  Please let me feel Your peace within me with each and every day of doing Your work that goes by.  Give me confidence in my abilities, and help me to have stronger faith in Your leading.  Please keep me in humility, and let me feel joyous in every duty that I fulfill.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

A Total Transformation

~~ Romans 12:2 (ESV) ~~  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

They say that hindsight is 20 / 20.  Looking back on the timeline of my life I can see so many places where God was obviously intervening on my behalf to guide my path.  This is something that I am overwhelmingly grateful for.  One of the bible studies that I took part in a couple years ago taught us how to create a timeline of our own lives.  On this timeline we learned to plot the important events in our lives; then we marked the points where we could see that God had obviously stepped in to have some input, even during times before we were Christians.  It was a fascinating exercise that taught me a lot.  I was amazed at how many times God took care of me when I didn’t know it at the time.  I was also stunned that as I looked at each event, and considered the options had I not taken on the path I did, that there wasn’t one event that I wished would have been different.  Even the painful ones, eventually ended up leading me to a place that I wouldn’t want to go back and undo.  God’s ways, timing, methods are all perfect.

One of these events where God inserted Himself into my life started in 2006 when I began a quest to ‘fix’ my head (that is, to improve my mental health)!  Romans 12:2 (ESV) tells us to renew our minds so that we can get to know God’s perfect will.  I didn’t have a real relationship with God at the time, so I didn’t approach this goal with a biblical reference in mind.  My decision to make this goal and pursue it came strictly out of fear.  It was fear that I would end up in the hospital if I continued on the path I was on.  My health and my life were very rapidly declining.  I was at a point where I felt I had no other option but to make some big changes now!  Pastor Henry at church has told me many times that “God does not waste anything.”   Romans 8:28 (NIV84) says that "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."  As I look back I can see this was certainly the case with my fear.  2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV) tells us “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”  God used the fear that the enemy had been controlling me with to help me make the first steps toward having real relationship with Him.  It was my fear that pushed me, but God used it to show me that I do indeed have a sound mind that is filled with His power and love.

Even if I would have thought more deeply about my goals, I  still would never have considered the idea that to renew my mind (to improve my mental state) would also require changes in my physical body, emotions, and spiritual health.  Each area is important to  creating a renewed, sound mind.  God led me into this realization step by step.  My own personal goal was simply to rid myself of Chronic Depression so that I could get my life back and become a fully functioning human being again.  It never occurred to me to even think beyond that.

After reading a book about improving health issues, I decided that my first order of business was to lose weight.  I felt that I couldn’t possibly have a healthy mind without a healthy body.  I had become very much overweight over the previous decade due, mainly, to medications.  I found a wonderful program, called Spark People, that taught me to change my lifestyle to one of healthy living; not a dieting approach.  Slowly, I not only learned to change my eating and exercise habits, but how to do it in a healthy way and to make them stick!  I lost a lot of weight.  In addition I learned how to incorporate new healthy habits and to set goals in other areas of my life.  I also learned that food can affect one’s mental health much more than I could have ever imagined.  Through much reading and research I found that there were foods I needed to completely eliminate from my diet; and others that help with depression and should be included on a regular basis.  It worked!  I can’t begin to tell you how drastically my mind changed as well as my body just by changing my diet.  I went from not being able to care for myself at times, to a living an independent life.

Once, I reached my goal weight I realized that the real work was about to begin.  I knew that the basic ‘operating system’ in my brain  contained mostly negative programming.  This came from a lifetime of experiences.  The bottom line here is that from very early in my life, my mind was programmed with depressing and harmful information.  I don’t blame anyone.  I see it as “that’s just the way it was.”  Whatever the case, I knew I needed to change my natural thinking patterns.  But how to do that?  It seemed like an impossible task; especially for someone who was single and alone, didn’t have much support or knowledge on how to do this.  So, I started reading everything I could get my hands on.  I spent my days eating healthy, working out, and educating myself on how to change my mind.

As I began to research this subject one of the first things to cross my desktop was the concept of ‘Positive Affirmations’.  I had never heard of it before, but the more I read about it the more fascinated I became.  I read that this idea first began with Norman Vincent Peale, and his book The Power of Positive Thinking.  I also read about some controversy, but I didn’t let that hinder me.  I was on a quest for health and life and nothing was going to stop me.  I started very simply by writing positive statements on index cards.  I would begin my days by reading through my stack of cards.  Later I was given a book of positive quotations as a gift; and I made it a point to read a few pages from that book daily as well.  Then I added a meditation program, which is a daily 30 minute audio program that claims to help change brainwaves in a healthy way.  There are no voices, just sounds, but it helped me.  More and more my mind was changing.  I found myself starting to naturally think in a positive way.  I still have to work at it obviously.  I have been diagnosed as Bipolar since then which adds to the compilations.  I have to be aware that if I don’t make it a continuous quest that negative thinking could slowly creep in and completely take over again.

Later, I had help from a medical standpoint by participating in a mental health outpatient program at my local hospital.  This program helped me learn how my relationships were faulty, how to cope with my past, and how to deal with my emotions.  Granted learning these lessons to the full is also an ongoing process and likely always will be, but it helped me grow even more by helping me to understand what had happened to me and why.

The most important change was in growing spiritually; developing a relationship with Jesus.  God led me through a very winding road to the church that I now attend.  I started by going to counseling with the pastor, which led to me being able to truly forgive those that have hurt me most in my past.  It also led me to being able to truly open my heart to allow the Holy Spirit in to begin His work in changing my heart as well.  I started to learn how to socialize again.  I  learned how to develop a prayer life and how to put daily bible reading and devotional habits into my life.  I learned how to worship God; whether that meant volunteering in the church office, or listening to praise and worship music when I’m alone.

This is obviously an extremely condensed version of my story, but it will show you how God led me through the process of renewing my mind, so I could learn His will for my life; and in the process grow closer to Him than I ever would have imagined possible.  God has good plans for each one of us who has invited Jesus into our hearts.  Like every one of God’s children, my journey and series of struggles will continue until the day I stand before Him.  However, I know that His will for my life is to be productive, happy, healthy, and to have a relationship with Him.

If you are in need of renewal, just know that He will guide you through every stage.  If you don’t currently have a relationship with Jesus, you can begin now by asking Him into your heart.  Confess that you are a sinner and that you want Him to be your Lord and Saviour; and that you are willing to let Him change your heart and life to follow Jesus.  Tell Him that you believe that He died on the cross and rose again from the dead to save you from your sins.  Tell Him that you believe Him; that you know you are forgiven, and that you have faith.  He will guide you through the next steps.  Just listen to His voice in your heart.  You will hear it.

My expedition in this world was / is long and difficult; but I wouldn’t go back and change it for anything.  Though it all started with fear, this journey has led me to a relationship with Jesus; to eternal life with Him.

~~ Dear God ~~  Thank You for every stage, struggle, and obstacle in my journey on this earth; because it brings me closer to You each and every day .  Continue to change my heart to become like that of Jesus; and continue to use me to bring others to Him as well.  May Your will be done, Lord, in every part of my life.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

OK, So the Story Goes Like This...

~~ 1 Chronicles 16:8-12 (NIV1984) ~~  Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done.  Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts.  Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.  Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.  Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,

Have you ever stopped long enough to look around and pay attention to how often you see it happening?  People are doing it in books, in the movies, at parties, at the office, on blogs, in the newspaper, magazines, on Facebook, Twitter, on the bus.  Some might even venture to say that you even see it on “reality TV”.  Of course, that last one depends on one’s definition of “reality”, but that’s another topic for another blog.  What am I talking about?  I’m talking about people telling their own stories.  They are true stories; talking about what happened at some point in the past in their lives.

Have you ever wondered why?  That is, why do people want so much to talk about their own lives; to relive and share the past?  It’s gone, over, done!  The credits have rolled and you can’t go back and change any scenes.  So, why talk about it so much?  Wouldn’t just accepting it and moving on from here make more sense?  Well, there are a list of reasons, and I’m sure this list is just a fraction of the complete list of reasons.  First, some people just feel the need to express themselves; whether it be pain, happiness, or just the need to clobber someone.  Others just like to talk about their favorite subject; ME!  Eh, well, not me, Carley; you know; themselves.  Others hope to gain something from sharing their story; fame, fortune, sex, material items, and the list goes on.

From a Christian perspective does the picture change?  Does it become a different story?  Is it a good thing for Christians to be telling our stories?  After all; boasting, gossip and the like are sins.  James 4:16 (NIV1984) tells us "As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil".  We certainly don’t want to intentionally do that.  We also know that once we truly surrender all to God and allow Him to shape us, mold our hearts to be like that of Jesus, and to help the fruit of the Holy Spirit become who we are; then some awesome things will start happening in our lives.  Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV1984) "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."  Once your heart truly belongs to Jesus you will start to see some supernatural things happening in your life; and at a rate that you could never hope to write them all down or share every incident.  There will be just way too many.  Sometimes Christians are afraid to share their stories because of fear of judgement from others.  Other times, Christians are afraid to lay everything down at the foot of the cross.  Thoughts of fear fill their minds about not having any input or control over their own lives if God is in the driver’s seat.  I mean “what if He wants me to do stuff that I don’t want to do?”.  Well Worshiper’s; guess what?  That’s a given.  Even though you may not be able to see it now, He will insist on you stepping out of your comfort zone.  But, in the end you will be blessed and thankful for it.

This kind of supernatural activity can only happen because of the sacrifice that Jesus made when He willingly died for us on the cross.  Once you let Him in to your heart and life, you are allowing Him to do His best miracles that He has in store for you.  Until then, you won’t see the miracles, blessings, or supernatural events.  The Word won’t be as clear in your mind.  2 Corinthians 3:16 (AMP) tells us “But whenever a person turns [in repentance] to the Lord, the veil is stripped off and taken away”.

This event of Jesus dying for us is the single most amazing and wondrous thing that has ever happened in history; or ever will happen.  Nothing else even comes close.  For that matter, everything else combined still doesn’t come close.  The story of Jesus deserves to be told to every single person on earth.  God wants us to tell our stories because  it is evidence of His amazing love for us, and what He has done for us.  He wants our stories to be told and remembered.  Psalm 111:4 (ESV) says “He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and merciful.”.  It is our responsibility to tell our stories to others.

So, is it scary sometimes?  Absolutely!  As a matter of fact we are even warned about who we share with.  Matthew 7:6 (NIV1984)Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs.  If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces".  I think “dogs” is a adjective to describe not only non-Christian’s, but also Christian’s who do not have a true relationship with Christ.  Those that don’t stop to pay attention, or have some fear of preventing them from allowing or believing in God’s miracles in our daily lives.  The best course of action, when in doubt, is to use your common sense and to listen very closely for God’s voice in your heart leading you.  We are meant to plant a seed.  If there can be any growing inside, it’s up to Jesus to do the watering.  We are not meant to stick around and put ourselves in a situation that could cause temptation, risk our salvation or our safety.

I have started writing a book about my life.  To be completely honest, it is very unnerving for me to be that open to the world; so that all is exposed.  Will I get judgement from others?  Absolutely.  I fully expect it.  It is also possible that there will be people that I love that will walk out of my life.  However, I know that He will be with me every step of the way.  Psalm23:4 (NIV84) says “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”  My story shows how much God loves me.  He loves me enough to go through a lot of trouble to shape me and teach me.  He loves me enough to send His Son to die for me!  My story is just one small example that displays how awesome God can be for each one of us.  So I will tell it, and I won’t be ashamed.  Psalm119:46 (NIV1984) says “I will speak of your statutes before kings and will not be put to shame”.

Next time you hear someone telling their story, stop and listen... really listen for the true message.  There are as many different ways for you to tell your story as there are people that have stories to tell.  You could write book, a blog or a poem; make a video or go on TV, chat on social networking, make a photo journal, stand on the roof of the tallest building in town and shout, or simply alone with a friend who really needs to hear the lesson you have to teach.  How are you going to tell your story?  You really do have a story worth telling, and there are people waiting to hear it.

~~ Dear God ~~ Thank you the journey you have taken me on, and for giving me a story that shows Your awesome love and mercy.  Please help me tell my story in a way that will touch people’s hearts.  Open their eyes, ears and heart so that  they will see Your peace within me, say “I want what she has”.  Please protect me from the “dogs”, and surround me with people that will love me no matter what my story has to say.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

What’s the Point, Anyway?

~~ 1 John 1:7 (NIV84)~~   But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Weekends are supposed to be our time off; a break from our busy lives to regenerate.  Ever notice that does not always seem to be what actually happens?!  Saturday’s there is cleaning to be done, kid’s functions to go to, shopping and errands to be taken care of, Aunt Esther’s 85th birthday party, and that is just to start with.  Sunday mornings are often the same routine as through the week.  You have to get everybody up and fed, and get ready to head out the door to church.  We go because... well, we have to go to church... right?!  Have you ever stopped to wonder why you go to church?  Truly deep down in your heart, what is the point?  Stop and think about that for a minute.

Was your first thought to the ‘why’ question something like ‘Well, I go because you’re supposed to.  It says so in the bible somewhere.”?  Well, if you are thinking along those lines, you certainly would not be alone.  However, this is not what God wants to see in our hearts as we go to His house.  Imagine if your family came to your house for a celebration dinner for your big promotion.  When you asked them why they came the response you got was ‘Well, I had no choice to come.  I knew you would freak if I didn’t come.”  That would not make you feel very loved or appreciated, now would it?!

God led me through a specific set of circumstances one day to bring this subject to light for me.  I was having a bad Bipolar Disorder episode and was quickly on my way to the bottom of a depression wave.  I got invited to spend the afternoon with my parents at their trailer at a nearby Christian campground.  I went because I did not want to disappoint them; but deep inside I was frustrated, irritated, had a big headache and I simply could not focus on any one thing.  The enemy had me believing that I wanted to stay home and wallow in it.  I listened to depressing music on my MP3 player to ‘drown out the world’.  The music I was listening to was the saddest songs I could find.  I really cannot say that I understand this next connection, but after a while it started to remind me of home.  That is, Newfoundland where I was born.  This in turn, reminded me that I love where I am living now more; and today, that is partly because of my church.  Thinking about the church reminded me of how much I love God, and how much He has changed my heart and my life.  Thinking about my blessings made me happy again.  I suddenly became very thankful that I decided to spend the afternoon in the park with my family.  Without that, I may not have come think about church and why I love it so much.  That is when I changed my music to something upbeat and stimulating!

When I realized the circle that God had just taken me on to pull me back into the light; I started to think about why some people go to church for the wrong reasons.  Whether we admit it or not, there are people who use the church for many bad reasons.  Things such as:
  • To get help with various needs and necessities of life; like food, financial help and other resources.
  • To hide from responsibility of spreading the gospel – to feel like you are being a ‘good Christian’ without having to step out of your comfort zone and do the work we are all called to do.
  • Position and power.
  • You like the pastor.
  • To find a spouse.
  • Because you are ‘supposed to go’.
  • Convenient location.
  • Networking with the ‘right’ people.
  • To place themselves in a desirable set of circumstances.

After thinking about this, I felt the need to re-evaluate my own reasons for going to church.  Here is what I came up with (in no particular order).  I go to church because:
  • It honour’s the Lord’s Day (Exodus 20:8)
  • It is a Home base for my life (read my blog post ‘How God Led Me Home’ for more details).
  • I feel safe – there is a certain peace we all have at home that we do not usually feel elsewhere.  To have that foundation gives us something to build our lives on.  The same is true for our spiritual lives.
  • I have friendship and church family (read my blog post ‘Families are like Fudge’ for more details on how wonderful I feel my church family is).
  • I am learning who God is, what His Word says, and how to apply it to my life.
  • It helps me to be closer to God – God is everywhere; but many of us feel closer to Him during worship times when we are in His house surrounded by other Christians.  Not going to church, for me, would be a little bit like talking to Grandma over Skype and never going to visit her in person.  It is just not the same.
  • The Bible tells us to fellowship with other Christians (1 John 1:7)
  • I am exposed to more opportunities to serve God.
  • I am part of something bigger than me – I have a place and a purpose.
  • I am learning to safely step out of my ‘box’.
  • I am learning to forgive and trust again.
  • I am learning more about knowing when God is talking to me, and how to include Him in every part of my life.
  • It builds my faith (Romans 10:17)
  • It encourages me to do things I would not likely have done otherwise – such as writing, socializing and participating in ministries.
  • I am exposed to Godly people who help and teach me – counsellors, mentors and others.
  • I am exposed to unconditional love – from God and from my Church Family.
  • I am learning to build healthy relationships with others.
  • I am learning to see myself the way God sees me, and that I can do what He says I can do.
  • It gives me accountability (Hebrews 13:17)
  • God tells us that we are to go to church (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Do you truly care about going to church?  How often do you go?  Do you tell people you are a Christian and yet only go at Christmas, Easter, or special family occasions?  Does your family worship at home together?  How about, family Bible studies at home?  Are your decisions based on what God’s Word says?  Does your family pray together?  Is devotional and quiet time alone with God a part of your daily routine?  Are you part of a small group or Bible study group?  There was a time when I went to church only on special holidays; and I figured that was OK as long as I believed that God is real.   I thought that having to go every Sunday was a bit ‘over the top’.  Now, it is a different story.  I really love going to church.  Sunday’s are my favourite day of the week.  It is worship day!  Yea!!!  So, what keeps me going back to church every week?  There is only one good and perfect reason... because I love Jesus and I want worshiping Him to be the biggest joy in my life!

~~ Dear God ~~ Thank You for making me a part of the church home and church family that You have chosen for me - A family that strives to be disciples and to create disciples for Jesus.  Thank you for helping us to be so open that the Holy Spirit can move so freely among us.  Thank You for all the blessings that You have given to me through this church, because of Your awesome grace and mercy.  Please always let my heart always be open to receiving more lessons that will bring me closer to Jesus with each and every day.  Do not let me ever lose sight of the point of why I love going to church.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Pay It Forward

~~ Matthew 7:12  (NIV84) So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Have you ever seen a movie called “Pay It Forward”?  The synopsis of this film is a young boy (Haley Joel Osment) who launches a good-will movement.  It is all about passing on the blessings that have been received to the next person.  Imagine how quickly the whole country could be ‘covered’ if every single person were to do a kind deed for 3 people this week.  I do not know the stats on this thought, but I am sure that it would not take long before every person in the country would have received a kind deed from someone.  Now, imagine it spreading to all of North America, then to Europe; and the whole world.  What a wonderful place it would be.

This idea is not a new one.  Jesus gave us what we now call The Golden Rule; “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31 NIV84).  In our society today, though, it seems that this concept has been all but forgotten.   We live in a society that is all about focusing on our own happiness and instant gratification instead of the well being of others.  One of the greatest gifts we can receive in our lives comes in the form of giving to others.  I would like to think that nothing I could be given would feel as good as seeing the happy face of someone else that I just helped in some way.  My heart is always filled with so much excitement as I pass on a blessing to another person.  Waiting to see the reaction feels a little like the anticipation one feels, as a child, when you were waiting for Christmas morning to come.  Re-learning to share love with each other is something that we need to make a priority in our lives.

Here are some ways that I have shared love; and others have shared with me:
  1. Not too long ago, in a supermarket, I was looking over some baskets of kiwi that were on sale looking for a good quality batch.   A little old lady came by and asked me what it was.  She had never seen kiwi before.  I explained to her that it is a very tasty fruit that is green on the inside; and is very good for you.  Some people like to eat the brown fuzzy peels, while others do not.  She was very happy with my input and thanked me for telling her about kiwi.  It made me feel very good to know I helped this wonderful woman.  It really did ‘make my day’!  (On a side note: eating the peels will increase your fibre intake up to three times, not to mention the extra nutrients and antioxidants.  Wash and cut a kiwi into pieces, with peels on, and mix into yogurt or a fruit salad and the juices soften the peels.  Very tasty and very healthy!)
  2. I helped a friend do some painting in her house when she was preparing it to put it on the real-estate market.
  3. I found out I was moving only 4 days before the moving day.  I spent those few days preparing; packing, arranging for utilities and various services, movers, and much more.  By the end of the day, on moving day, I was exhausted to say the least.  I needed dinner.  The cookware was packed somewhere in the mountain of boxes, and I had no energy left to dig it out.  My wonderful friend came over; with her own food and cookware, and made me dinner.
  4. I do not have a car right now.  Because of this, I have a few friends that give me rides whenever I need them.  They take me to church, grocery shopping, to appointments; and more.  I love them dearly for it.  To them, “it’s nothing”.  To me, it is a wonderful ministry that I am very thankful for.  One day when I get a car, I intend on making it a ministry of my own to ‘pay forward’ all the years I have been given rides by my family and friends; by giving rides to others who need them.
  5. My family has a habit of inviting others to spend Christmas with us.  At least one of us is always bound to show up with a guest for the holidays.  Our attitude has always been “the more, the merrier”.  Last year, I invited a special friend from Toronto who would have spent Christmas alone.  We welcomed him into our celebration; placed gifts for him under the tree, and had a very fun holiday that everyone will remember.
  6. My parents were superintendents in a large senior’s apartment building.  One year we realized that many of these tenants did not have anyone to spend Christmas with.  So we planned a huge Christmas dinner and invited all those who would have been alone otherwise.  My Mom, my sister-in-law, two of my Aunts, and myself; cooked and prepared dinner (and all the fixings) for approximately 40 people.  It was a lot of work, but it is one of my most treasured Christmas memories ever.
  7. I gave someone the book that helped me get past my divorce; when he found himself in the same situation.
  8. I have a friend that comes to my apartment now and then with a movie; and sometimes dinner, to keep me company.  This is something that I very much appreciate as a single person living alone; who suffers from Bipolar Disorder.
  9. My new-apartment building does not allow dogs.  I have some friends that have been taking care of my dog for me in the past year as a result of this.  Without the incredible generosity of my beautiful friends I would be left in a terrible bind.  However, I never give up faith that God will find a way to reunite me and my baby.
  10. A wonderful person from my church family; who is unknown to me, left a card of encouragement for me in my mail slot at church during a time when I needed some support.  I keep it pinned to my message board at home where I can see it and be reminded that God, and my church family love me.
How have you shared love with someone lately?  What gifts and blessings can you pass on to someone else?  As children of God; we are called to be like Jesus.  God wants us to share the love, so that other people will see Jesus in us.  He is the most selfless, giving, loving person there has ever been.  God wants us to develop our character to be like that of His Son, who was willing to be a sacrifice in order for us to be saved.  There has never been a greater ‘Pay It Forward’ gift?!

CHALLENGE for YOU:  Try to ‘pay it forward’ by doing 3 good deeds for someone this coming week; then come  back here and share your stories with everyone in the comment section below.

 ~~ Dear God ~~    Your ways are so wonderful that I never cease to be amazed.  The gift of giving is the perfect reward.  By giving selflessly, I am rewarded in return.  Please help me to always find incredible loving joy in giving to others.  Let others always see a reflection of Jesus in me each time I ‘pay it forward’.  Never let a week go by in my life where I do not bless someone in some way.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

The Reflection in the Mirror

~~1 Samuel 16:7~~But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Sometimes it seems that I check the mirror a hundred times before I finally let myself walk out the door.  Even then at times I finish fixing everything in the car.  My hair has to be just right.  The bangs have to be straight and not curled too short.  On the curly-hair days, the curls have to be fluffed and puffed just right; but not too much or it looks like fuzz.  On the straight-hair days it needs to have that ‘just combed’ look, and then I want it to stay that way.  My make-up has to be flawless.  The outfit has to hang straight and look well put together.  I do not want to look too fat.  If I happen to be having a bloated-belly day than I have to cover it, yet making sure that I do appear as though I am trying to hide a bloated belly.

Many years ago a friend, who had done some modeling during her younger years, taught me a lot about dressing well; making sure that I knew such things as, what type of neckline I should  be wearing for my body type.  Plus, I had the privilege of meeting a professional make-up artist who taught me about doing my cosmetics in a skilled manner; teaching me not only the correct colors for my skin tone, but how to reshape my face with shading.  For years, I purchased only professional TV-cosmetics, and used only professional brushes and tools.  I special ordered all my supplies through my make-up artist friend.  In addition, my hair stylist was a guy who worked for modeling agencies.  He was expensive, but he was known as the best in town.  I spent a lot of money on how I looked.  Looking good is important, especially for first impressions.  A first impression can only happen once so you have to be ready!

As the years passed, things changed.  For a variety of reasons I gained a lot of weight.  During these overweight years, I very rarely looked in a mirror.  I only fussed with my make-up and clothes if I happened to be going somewhere ‘special’, which was not often.  Even then I did not put as much work or thought into it as I had in previous years.  I avoided shopping for clothes; practically, at all costs.  I refused to admit that I need to shop in the oversized department, so therefore I did not want to shop at all!  I would look in the mirror and felt that I did not recognize the reflection.  For about a decade I the face looking back at me was not mine.  It was something that felt very unsettling and I never got used to.  I thought I was ugly.  I even developed a self-harming habit that reinforced my thoughts that ‘I am ugly and I deserve to be ugly’.

Later when I started to lose weight my self-esteem started to rise again.  The lower the number on the scales and the size on my clothing went, the better I liked myself.  However, I still did not let myself look in the mirror often.  I learned later, that just because I was changing physically did not mean that my mental state was going to change with it.  Even though I had lost about 50 lbs at that point, I still was not ‘thinking thin’.  I was still thinking in the same way I did as an overweight person.  One day, as I was getting ready to go somewhere I was running around doing about 14 different things at the same time.  I was in my bedroom wearing just my underwear and I caught my reflection in the mirror.  I could not believe my eyes!  I was completely overwhelmed and I started to cry.  There was a new person looking back at me.  This woman was the one I remembered from before... before I ever gained weight when I was happy with myself.  She looked incredible... yet she is me!

As time went on, I lost even more weight, but I did not lose the ‘fat thinking’.  I still struggle with it at times.  Granted, I love the new energy levels and the attention.  I also rediscovered my love of shopping for new clothes and make-up.  As time went on I began to realize that the biggest problems in my life were still there.  My self-esteem started to plummet again, adding to the mix of problems from Bipolar Disorder.

God has been helping me with these issues by reminding me, on several occasions, that I am made in His image (Genesis 1:27).  In the book called “Who Calls Me Beautiful?” author, Regina Franklin talks about how we are deceived by the worldly views of what is ‘beautiful’.  We are bombarded with images that tell us that thin is beautiful.  Kids as young as 6 and 7 years old now are preoccupied with the shape of their bodies.  We strive for perfection that is not possible because of false ‘photo shopped’ and airbrushed photos.  The media around us and the voices within become false idols.

The bible tells us that this is not how God sees us.  To Him, we are each one of His unique children.  He knows us so well that there is no need for a ‘first impression’.  First impressions with God are a mute point.  He knew us before we were born; before we knew ourselves.  (Jeremiah 1:5).  He loves us just the way we are.  When we say mean things about ourselves it hurts Him.  Each one of us is a one-of-a-kind creation in His image... a masterpiece made by the most Holy God!  He does not want our self-esteem to be shaped by the reflection we see in the mirror.  He does not want our hearts to be filled with ugly thoughts or feelings about ourselves or anyone else.  If we see ourselves as beautiful, according to God’s definition, we become more and more like Jesus... and we do not have to spend a dime!  The scales and the size of my clothing are just numbers; that give ratings according to a worldly defined system of measurement.  Granted, we still need to make our bodies and our minds healthy, but those changes are to be worship of God, so to make our bodies the temple He meant it to be (1 Corinthians 6:19).  He has to be the number one reason in our hearts that we make changes.  Otherwise we are still worshiping the false idols.  Even the hottest and sexiest supermodel on the runway today, may not reflect beauty in God’s mirror.  When we can look in His mirror and see a reflection of Jesus, then we know that we are truly seeing beautiful

~~Dear God~~ Your definition of ‘beautiful’ is far beyond anything that we can completely comprehend.  Our worldly defined views and creations of beauty do not begin to compare.  Please remove any desire I have to follow false ‘beauty-idols’.  Help my body and mind become healthy in a way that pleases You.  Make my heart become like that of Jesus so that I will reflect His beauty to all those I encounter.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

True Colors

~~~ Romans 12:2 - Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
A friends status message the other day read, "If you want it, get it. If you dream it, believe it. The sky's never the limit. So go on, show the world who you are. Don't be afraid to show your true colors. I love it". Awesome thought, isn’t it?! I mean, it’s inspiring, uplifting and encouraging. If you were in need of reassurance and a friend said this, you would think this friend must be special to give you such a boost.
Well, my first thought; seriously, was 'Dear Lord, please don't let me look at life or the world this way'. Nowhere is God included in this thought. It's such a relative way of thinking; which is redundant thinking. To reach “the limit”; one needs to know what that limit is. Who has defined “the limit”? Have I decided how high I am going to aim? What makes my definition any more valid than others? Why do others opinions matter at all? What makes me, or others around me, qualified enough to make such decisions? This method of selection will not get you “air borne”. What is ‘right’ for one is not ‘right’ for another. This way of life leaves you living alone with no support because other people are living in their own worlds, not in yours. It leaves you without any possibility of expansion, variation, or change; because you can only go as far as your own limits will allow... and you do have limits.  Everyone does.  It means we are human.  Jesus said “apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). He is the only one who is qualified to make any decisions on limits. Granted; God gave us a free will, and a brain for common-sense, and He expects us to use it. Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things”. But that is not the most important part of that message.  In today's relative-thinking society the thought stops there.  The problem is that this is not the whole message.  To stop there would be like watching the first half of a movie and not the 2nd half and claim that you saw the whole story.  The other half of that is “though Christ who strengthens me”. You cannot fly without a plane. You cannot reach the limits of your life without God.
See, I only 'want it', if God wants it for me. I only want to 'get it', if He wants to give it to me. I only want the 'dream' in my heart if it's in His plan for me. I only want to 'believe it' by putting my faith in Him, and not in anything or anyone else. Without Jesus, the sky is the limit, and even then it is only if you are able to aim that high.
I do dream of showing the world who I am. So, who am I? I am a child of God who desires more than anything to be more and more like Jesus. The person who posted this status message was extremely nasty to me once, in another ‘lifetime’. So much so that I had nightmares every night for months because of what they said to me. I hope that the 'colors' that this person is so proud of showing is never the colors that people will ever see in me. They are dark and dreary colors. I want my world to be colored only by the hues, in the saturation, that are inside the heart of Jesus. I am proud to show my bright, beautiful true colors because they are becoming; more and more every day; to be a love, heart, and passion that our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, will be proud of.
~~ Dear God ~~ Please make Your Will known to me in every situation. Open my eyes to see it, my ears to hear it, my mind to accept it and my heart to receive it. Let all my thinking and my decisions be in line with Your plans for my life. Make the colors of my heart so bright and beautiful that others will see Your grace and glory shinning from within me. In Jesus name, AMEN.
