Problem Solving 101

Matthew 6:33 ESV ~~ But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

by Carley CooperClick to download this pic on FreeDigitalPhotos.net

How many times have you had a problem and tried to solve it only to be disappointed?  What kinds of things did you try as a solution?  Did you turn to friends for advice?  Or, maybe you went to a family member, a doctor, or other authority.

Giving Advice

A friend came to me for advice on a problem.  He told me all about it, and when he was done I didn’t have a solution for him.  I wasn’t sure what advice to give.

So I said "The only thing I know to do is pray about it".

Afterward it hit me; why is it that praying was a last resort?   So often the first thing we do, now-a-days, is to turn to the internet.  We research it until we’re blue in the face, or post it on Facebook looking for opinions, and even then we don’t come up with an acceptable solution.

Put God First

God’s Word says that we should put Him before everything.  He should be the very first one that we turn to for anything.  Every situation we face, good or bad, should be run by God first for His input.

I saw a quote a little while ago that said “Sometimes when things are falling apart, they may actually be falling into place” (Author unknown).

Every problem we have, God can use it for our own good, and His glory.  There is nothing that He can’t turn around.  The enemy isn’t strong enough to get a hold on us if we don’t let him.  But we have to use God’s help.  To get that help we need to look to Jesus, talk to Him, and most of all, listen to Him.  It should be our first instinct in every thing we do.

God Will Take Care of You

We should be so comfortable turning to Him, and knowing that He will take care of our every need that we don’t worry about anything.  Matthew 6:31-33 ESV says “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you”.

Why don’t you try praying first next time, instead of last.  I will certainly be trying to do that with each and every problem I have.  It will also be the first advice that I give a friend in need, instead of the last.  God loves us, each and every one.  He won’t let us go in want of anything that is a need.

Let’s Pray

Dear God ~~ Loving, graceful, merciful, and ever-faithful Lord; thank You so much for taking care of my every need.  Forgive me for not turning to You first instead of last with so many problems.  Please help me to turn to You first, and to hear Your voice clearly so that Your will is done always.  I pray in Jesus name, AMEN

I Think I Just Saw An Angel!

~~ Psalm 91:11-14 (NIV84) ~~  For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.  You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.  “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

This is the third article in my series about Angels.  In the first post (Angels From Heaven) I talked about how people in our lives can be like angels sent by God to help us.  I shared a poem I wrote to someone special in my life who has been like an angel for me.  In the second article (Who Is Your Guardian Angel?) I talked about how God has given us angels, celestial beings, to protect us; to keep us from  danger.  Sometimes, if we are paying close enough attention, we will even get to see our angels as they’re digging us out of a pit that we got ourselves into!  My friend and author, Paul Duarte, experienced this first hand; literally!  As a Worship Melodies Guest Author, he shared his personal true story of being rescued by an angel from a situation that could have been fatal, on a cold winter day.

Being a good friend, or rescuing us from our own messes aren’t the only purposes for angels in our lives.  Sometimes they are also sent to us to assist God in redirecting our paths after we’ve wandered into dangerous territory.  They help to prevent something terrible from happening in the future.  I have my own angel story about a day when an angel lifted me out of a very bad place.

It happed one day, several years ago; before I was an obeying and practicing Christian; before I knew the Holy Spirit or had a relationship with Jesus.  Even though I wasn’t living the life of Christianity; I did believe that there was a God, and I did believe that there was a man named Jesus who died for me.  If you’ve been a regular reader of my posts for quite some time, you’ll know that I am Bipolar.  I don’t hide it.  I talk about it freely because more people need to know that mental illness is not something to be afraid of; but that’s a whole other blog.  For that matter it’s a whole other book!

Well, one night I was in the midst of a very bad depression episode.  It was one of the worst I’ve had.  Today, well, I no longer go to this dark place, because Jesus has rescued me.  That’s not to say that I’m totally cured... yet!  Back then, though, when I was in this dark place I would pray to God.  I’m not sure I ever really thought it was going to do anything for me realistically.  However, when I needed it the most and I had nowhere else to turn, I figured it couldn’t hurt.  Of course, back then most of my prayers were prayers of petition.  I just asked for things from God either for myself or others.  I never gave back to Him or worshiped Him.

As I mentioned, on this particular night in question I was at the end of my tether.  I felt completely alone and I literally had no hope left inside me.  I  was to the point where I didn’t want to live.  Even, with this in my heart, and not knowing God; I also knew that doing something desperate to myself was not the answer.  I believed that no matter how bad things looked, hurting myself would only make it worse.  So, for that reason I was, literally, up all night crying and begging God to let me leave this world.  I begged Him “Please don’t let me see the morning light”.  I figured that asking Him to do it for me, would get me out of the mess that doing it myself would cause.  Of course, now that I’ve seen the light and I can think more logically, I can see the flaws in this kind of thinking.

Well, the morning came, and I was still here.  With that in mind, I knew that the day must go on.  My first order of business was an errand to the bank.  I had a financial issue that couldn’t wait, and I had to actually go to the bank to resolve the problem.  But, I got there early.  It was about ten minutes before opening time.  So I stood in the mall outside the bank door waiting for it to open.

Standing closer to the door, than me was an older lady with a walker.  I saw her there, but I didn’t speak to her.  She was short; maybe five feet tall.  She appeared to be in her late sixties; and white hair that was short with large loose curls.

After a couple of minutes another lady walked in from outside.  She stood next to me as though she were waiting in line for the bank as well.  She looked at me like she knew me; but I didn’t recognize her as anyone that I had ever seen before.  I’m not good at remembering names, but I am very good at remembering faces, so if I knew her I’m sure I would have recognized her face.  She was about five and a half feet tall, and looked to be in her mid sixties.  Her hair was shades of grey; salt and pepper type.  It was straight and about shoulder length, curled slightly in around the bottom; and straight bangs cross the front.  She was wearing a dark-red cardigan sweater and a white, or light colored, blouse.

She simply said to me “Do you have the time?”

It bothered me that she asked for the time.  I don’t know why, but I felt angry and irritated.  I tried not to show it though, and I looked at the time on my phone and told her what it said.  After a couple more minutes, the doors to the bank were opened.  All three of us that were waiting, walked into the bank.  There were several tellers on duty; more than enough to serve all of us .

I was the one to walk the fastest, I am assuming, because of my younger age and much longer legs.  So, I was the first in line.   However... this did not sit well with the little old walker lady.  She came at me practically waving that thing and rushing to the first teller ahead of me screaming “I was here first, you’re not going to butt in line ahead of me”.

It shocked me.  I would not have expected that to happen.  She looked so frail and sweet before.  My mind was still in a state of surreal after the night I had just lived through.  It took every ounce of energy that I had, plus some that I didn’t know I had, to hold back my tears and appear normal in a public place.  Having a feisty old lady in front of me at the bank would normally not be something that bothered me.  On a normal day, I probably would have laughed at it.  That day, though; that little incident was bigger than anything else I had ever had to handle.  It was enough to push me over the edge.  The surprise I got literally took my breath away for a minute.  I stood there with my mouth open in surprise not knowing if I should or could say anything without crying; or worse.

In that minute, the third lady standing behind me; the one who asked me the time stepped closer to me.  She put her right hand on my right shoulder.  I turned my head to look at her.  She leaned in close to me, as if she were about to whisper something.  I simply heard a soft “Shhhhh.  Shhhhh”.  No other words were spoken.  In that instant, I felt the most overwhelming wash over my body.  I felt an instant, there was a warmth and sense of peace.  I stepped up to the teller, took care of my business and walked out of the bank.  I went home and had a good day.

I don’t know if this lady was an angel, or just some kind old lady who was very intuitive.  I did not look back as I walked out of the bank; so I don’t know if she would have still been there if I had looked back.  I just know that God used her to bring me back from the edge.  From the edge of what?, I have no idea.  What would have happened to me, or what I may have done, or how I would have reacted if she hadn’t touched me; I do not now.  Literally, God only, knows!  Either way, she was an angel sent to me that day and I will be eternally grateful to both her and God.

~~ Dear God ~~    I have so many things to thank You for.  You are so awesome, and Your love is so great that “Thank You” hardly seems sufficient.  Thank you for the angels, of all types, that you send to rescue me.  Thank you for not letting me fall into the pit of darkness where I could be lost forever.  Thank you for the journey that I have travelled that has brought me into a relationship with You.  I am so thankful to You that I dedicate my whole life to serving You.  I am Yours.  But, who am I that my sinful soul and broken body could be of value to You?  Yet, it is because You gave Your Son to save me.  Thank You.  Please use me in whatever place that will help Your will to be done, and to advance Your kingdom.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

This is the second article in my series on Angels.  In my first post (Angels From Heaven) I talked about how some people in our lives are so special that we can only believe that they were sent to us by God.  We know that they are real people; human beings who live on this planet with us, but they have been such a key factor in helping us at some point, that our only conclusion is that God purposely placed this individual in our life at this moment.  There have been several, including my dogs, that I can look back and believe were my angels here on earth.

However, what about the traditional type of angels?  That is those we see we can’t see because they’re really celestial beings.  Most of us believe that we have at least one angel that is sent to protect us throughout our lives.  Of course, some of us need a whole team of angels to keep us from the constant mess that we seem to have a talent for getting into.  But, that’s a whole other blog!  The trouble is, as I mentioned, we can’t see our heavenly BFFs (for those who were either born yesterday or never went to high school, BFF means Best Friend Forever).  Imagine if we could look them in the eye every day.  Think about it; we’d never be lonely, there would always be someone to give you advice, and someone to bounce an idea off of before you blurt it, out only to wish you could take it back.  For the rest of  your life there would always be someone to laugh at you when you fell or messed up.  Plus, when you die your angel could stay behind for a day and wipe out your hard drive for you!

How do you know, with any certainty that you haven’t seen your angel?  Just because we don’t see them every day, doesn’t mean that we have never seen them.  There are millions of stories from people who have seen or done things that cannot be explained by mere human logic.  One of these stories happened to one of my closest friends, Paul Duarte.  I’ve invited him to write his story to post here as a Worship Melodies Guest Author.  This is Paul’s true story!

God loves each and every one of us.  In His eyes we are all celebrities.  That’s why we need our divine body guards; to protect us from the underworld’s paparazzi, or worse!

Who is Your Guardian Angel?

by Paul Duarte

Psalm 23:4 (KJV) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Once upon a time, I was working in Toronto as a self employed courier and delivery man.   I had a small three ton truck and subbed work from another company in Ajax, Ontario - I was on call pretty much anytime during the day or night.  One day, on a cold and drizzly afternoon in February, I got a call sometime late afternoon to make a delivery to the small town of Bracebridge, an hour and a half north of the city.  The weather was miserable, the day was dark and gloomy.  It had been raining all day that day - so the ground and the roads were just a clear sheet of ice.

I did not fancy the thought of going out that afternoon at all, but I needed the money, so I went anyway.  I figured since I was driving a heavy vehicle, if I took it easy I would be fine.  At about forty five minutes into the trip, it was late afternoon and the dark started to close in.  You need to remember that in February in Ontario, it starts getting dark at 4:30 PM.  It started to drizzle and ice started to accumulate on the wipers.  Visibility was next to zero, but I pressed on just in case it would get worse later.  I did not want to get home in the middle of the night.

The bright city lights started to fade in my rear view mirror and I found myself in the country, no houses or buildings of any kind to be seen anywhere around me.  Things were going smoothly, until I hit a patch of ice on the road where the road maintenance crew had not passed by with the salt trucks yet.  I swerved to the right; I swerved to the left and no response.  The truck only came to a full stop when I came crushing into a ditch.  I took a walk around the truck and was relieved to see that there was no damage to the vehicle.  It was cold and with the wind chill, it must have been a good minus-twenty outside.

I climbed back into the cab; I laid my hands on the wheel, rested my head between my hand and I started to pray.  “Father, I come to you in my hour of need.  You know the situation I am in.  I have no radio, if I let the truck run with the heater going, I will run out of gas and I have no money or credit card to refill and only You Father, knows where the closest station is.  I will surely die frozen before I am found.  If I turn off the truck to conserve fuel, the end result will be the same because I am low and I need that fuel to get back home.  So I am begging you Father, hear my prayer and make a miracle happen.”

I finished my prayer; I lay down on the seat and prepared myself for the worst.  Not more than fifteen minutes later, I heard a tractor with chains on, coming up the road.

I thought to myself, “What the heck!  Where did this guy come from?  There were no farms, no roads and no driveways for mile.”

I thought nothing more of it.  I needed help and here was this frail old man, all bundled up, in a rickety old farm tractor offering to get me out.  I thought there is no way; this little tractor is going to pull out a three ton truck.  But he insisted that he could and proceeded to hook up the chains to the rear of my rig.

He said to me in a firm but rusty voice, “Get in, start the engine and put it in reverse slowly.”

I did as he requested and low and behold, that little tractor pulled me out without any effort what-so-ever.  I was dumb founded; I could not believe my eyes.

I said to the kindly old man, “look I am sorry but I don’t have any money on me, but what do I owe you anyway. I will send you some, I give you my word.”

The old guy replied, “I believe you would, but I don’t want any money.”

I said to him, “Well there must be something I can give you or do for you.”

He said, “There is something you can do for me.”

“What is that?” I replied.”

“Simply this!  Whenever you come across someone in distress like you were, stop and help them just as I helped you.” He said.

“Ok,” I said.

“Promise me,” he said.

“I promise.” I told him.

I wanted to get his number anyway, because somehow I wanted to repay him for his kindness.  So I asked him to wait while I got a pen and paper from the glove box.  I headed towards the cab and I heard him start up the tractor.   I got the pen quickly and came out to ask him to wait, but he and the tractor was gone.  Vanished into thin air!  I could see for quite a long distance up the road ahead of me, and behind me; he was nowhere in sight, and there were no side roads or driveways to turn into.  Where did the old man and his little tractor go?  I do not know.

I made my delivery and went home.  For two days, I could not think of nothing else, but the events of that night.   I cannot explain this story and some may think I was crazy and delusional from the cold.  Even though I prayed to God, I was not a Christian back then, nor did I believe in miracles.  But I tell you, from that day forth, I began to believe.

~~ Dear God ~~    thank you for all the blessings you bring before us, when we are too blind to see them.  Thank you for your words when you speak to us, even when we are too deaf to hear them and thank you for all the miracles you bring before us, even when we too busy and fail to recognize them.”  Amen

The Wishing Well

~~ Psalm 37: 4-7a ~~Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.  Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this; He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.  Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him...

I love that little ‘plop’ sound.  The one you hear when you toss a coin into the water in a wishing well.  I am sure everyone has tossed a coin into a wishing well at least once in their life.  Standing with eyes closed and coin in hand, I repeat a wish to myself in my mind.  I wish I had a job, I wish I could go back to school, I wish I had a boyfriend, I wish I had a flatter stomach, I wish I had bigger breasts, I wish I could lose that last 20 lbs, I wish I had another house, I wish I was a better photographer, I wish I was a better decorator, I wish I was a better writer, I wish others could see the me that I see in my dreams.  The list goes on and on.  Then I toss the coin, listen for the ‘plop’; and watch the little water ripples for a minute, feeling a little bit of anticipation, as if I expected the ‘Wishing Well Fairy’ to come out and grant me my hearts desires.

It sounds a little silly when you think about it.  I mean, seriously; how much can we expect to get for a quarter these days?!  Or maybe you ‘splurged’ hoping to get a big dream by tossing in a one dollar or two dollar coin, or even a few coins?!  Well, I hate to be the one to shatter the fantasy world, but the Wishing Well Fairy has retired and moved back home with the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, Fairy God Mother, and Santa Claus; never to be seen.  You can dump all the coin in the whole city into that well and it will not grant you your wish.  The only thing you will have accomplished is to waste a lot of money by dumping it into a hole in the ground!

God is the only one who can grant wishes to come true.  Even then it is dependent on whether or not it is in His will, if you are an obedient Christian, and if your heart truly has pure motives.  Matthew 5:8 tells us “Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God”.  If you want your wishes to come true you have to do something about it.  Nothing is going to fall out of the sky and into your path.  You have to work for it; and if you don't have to work for it then you probably don't want it! God gave us common sense and free will for a purpose.  If you want those wishes to come true, you need several things.
  1. The desire to do something about it.  If your motivation is strong enough, you will have the inspiration to take steps toward making your dream a reality.  If your drive is not strong enough to force you to take action than you have to ask yourself, why not?!  Is this dream truly what your heart desires?  Is there something standing in your way; such as fear, anger, or insecurities?
  2. A plan, with goals stated out step by step.  Seriously, write it down!  Make a plan; write a journal, order blue prints; put it on paper with the process details including major goals, minor goals, and deadlines!  If you do not have all the resources you need, such as enough financing for example, than make those problems a part of your plan.  One of the first major goals should be to be getting enough money!  What are you to do to get it?
  3. Accountability. If you think you cannot hold yourself accountable, than you also need to develop an accountability plan.  Ask; or hire, if necessary; someone to help you stay accountable.  If you have some road blocks standing in your way such as fear or insecurities, then you have to put it in your plan to get around these as well.  Conquer them.  Seek out the help you need to get around them.  Ask God to show you how to do this.  He will insist that you step out of your comfort zone, so be prepared.  Also, brace yourself to forge through some very painful things that you most certainly do not wish to face... but sooner or later you have to, if you expect to make progress in any direction.
  4. Your focus to be on God.  Your plan has to be one that will bring glory to God, and bring you closer to Him.  Your heart has to hold this as a vital purpose in your plans.
  5. Faith that He will make your dreams reality; or to lead you to a much better dream.  Even when things look impossible, do not give up.  A very special friend once told me when I was about to throw in the towel “Do not Quit.  It is when things look impossible that God does His best miracles”.  My friend was right.  I have seen God do miracles in my life because I refused to let go of my faith.  I remind myself of this on a regular basis now, to help make sure I do not ever give up hope in God.
  6. Prayer.  Above all else, you have to keep God in the loop with each and every step.  Ask Him, to give you a clear vision of the goal; about the steps to take, how to progress, and how to make your plan a reality.  Then listen for His voice, and watch for messages that He will send you.  Also, keep in mind, that His answer may be “no”.  It may take a while but He will respond one way or another.  Everything happens in His time, so be patient.  Ask Him to reveal to you, a new and better plan if this one should not be in His will.  Then ask Him to make your heart willing; and your eyes, ears and mind open to receive the messages He is sending you.  Have you ever done that before... ask God to change your desires?  It is very difficult, but I assure you that it is worth it!  Without God as your leader, your plan will not be a success.  At some point it will fail.  Even if it does become a reality, it will not turn out to be what you hoped it to be.
Wishing wells can be beautiful with a certain magical quality about them; but if you keep looking into a hole filled with water and reaching for wishes, sooner or later you are going to fall in and drown.  God is ready and waiting for you to ask Him to help.  He put your desires in your heart, and He put them there for a reason.  He has a plan to make them happen.  God not only wants you to have dreams; He wants to give them to you, and more!  Mostly, He wants to be included in those dreams.

~~ Dear God ~~ Your ways are perfect.  Your plans for my life are better than any dreams my heart can desire.  Please let all my wishes be tossed into Your Wishing Well, and not into anything that is not in Your Will for me.  Lead my every step so that my desires will be those that will show Your awesome love, grace and mercy.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Well, it is finally here.  The first day of summer!  Yea!!!  I love summer.  If God let me run the world, the first rule I would make would be ‘No more winter’.  The second rule would be ‘No more need for long pants’... or shoes.  I am not a huge fan of long pants.  I like living in shorts, skirts and tank tops as much as possible.  It feels so much less restrictive; and I love feeling so feminine.  Some may think that this is a silly dream, but I think that is a fun dream.  Summer is a great time for dreaming.  What do you dream about?  I think about romance, drive-in movies, long walks along the beach at dusk, water-balloon fights, and pansies (because they were my Grandmother’s favourite).  The whole world just seems lighter, happier, and freer in the summer time.

I had a chance recently to write about one of my dreams.  The requested topic was to write about a place that I would like to travel.  Well, that was not something I had to sit and think about for more than half a second.  Italy.  La bella Italia.  Just the sound of it is romantic.  I have dreamed most of my life of going to Italy.  In a perfect world, I would go on an extended tour, taking maybe a couple years to take in the culture and beauty of Italia.  Then maybe I would buy an old villa in the Tuscan country side that I could fix up, where I could spend some time.  I am not sure why I have always had such a passion for Italy, I just now it is there.

A perfect day would be to wander through city streets chatting with fascinating people and having lunch at some small bistro.  Then I would go on to spend the afternoon picking through old treasures at a flea market.  One of a kind items that I could never find anywhere else.  Things that I could bring home and use to decorate my house in Canada to look like that old Tuscan villa.  Another afternoon might be spent posing for a slightly risquĂ© portrait painted by a fine-looking ‘starving’ Italian artist.  Or maybe, I could go to a vineyard and experience a wine and cheese tasting, Italian style.   Then, to accept a dinner invitation to a big Italian party from a handsome gentleman who speaks to me with such romance, yet I have no clue what he is saying; and it does not matter because we are having so much fun together.

As I did some research on this topic so I could write about it, I found myself being led to biblical resources about faith.  I was surprised, but as I thought about it; that is exactly what a dream is all about.  It is faith in God that the dream He has put into your heart will indeed come to be reality one day.  When you have a dream that is a passion you cannot explain and it never seems to die; it is then you know that your dream is from God.  If God put it there, it is there for a reason.  Our pastor tells us all the time that “God does not waste anything”.  It is by the gift of grace from God that, because we have faith, He will save us (Ephesians 2:8).  What is faith?  “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1 – Emphasis mine).  If all it takes for God to do the amazing undertaking of saving us from spending eternity without Him is for us to simply believe in Jesus, then surely He will have no problems with a dream or two while we are here on earth.

What are your dreams?  Travel?  A big home?  Missions trips around the globe?  A marriage and a family?  A fulfilling career?  Or maybe, it is simply just to have a vacation for a couple of weeks in a serene place where you can just escape the reality of the world, and focus on Him.  Whatever your dreams, have faith; and it just may become a certainty.  I do suggest, though, that you keep it to something realistic, and never let anyone else take your dream away from you.  For example, I do not expect God to put me in charge as much fun as I am assuming that would be.  Nor do I expect to escape the winter cold, long pants or shoes.  Through prayer and listening to His voice you just may find that the dreams you thought were ‘too crazy to be real’ just may become your world!  Do not be afraid to dream big.  God can handle big dreams!  Maybe I will get to travel to Italy one day.  I have faith.

If I still believed in past lifetimes, as I did before I was a practicing Christian, I would think that in a past lifetime I was Italian.  I feel like I miss it.  I think if I went there today I would want to stay.  I can honestly see that happening.  Well, until next time 'Ciao Baby'.

~~Dear God~~ Your ways are so amazing.  You give us dreams so that we can hold on to faith in You.  Please help me to always hold on to my big dreams because as long as I have them I will know that I have big faith and that You are forever with me.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Small Steps - Are they Really?

~~ Romans 5:3-5 ~~ Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

There is an old Chinese proverb that says ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step’.  When was the last time you took a trip?  Was it a trip that you were looking forward to for quite some time, or a last minute decision?  The plans for your journey may have all fallen together in a half hour, or they could have taken months to put together.  Either way it was a planned trip!  Almost everything in life has some type of plan before it can happen.

Part of my journey has taken me through weight loss.  This is hardly unique these days.  It is a big problem, no pun intended; yet at the same time, when you look at it; it's all common sense!  You put healthy stuff in; you’re going to get healthy stuff coming back!  As part of the program that I used, I have been well educated on the importance of setting small goals.  It teaches us that we are not initially out to lose 50 lbs, or 100 lbs or more.  In fact, we are out to lose 10, or maybe even 5!  Then, and only then, when that's gone; we are set out to lose another 5 or 10 and so on!  We are well taught that small steps are important; and so is not 'biting off more than you can chew', being patient, not giving up when you have set backs (which you will), and rewarding yourself at each goal achieved.  Working hard and relentlessly continuing to push forward and you will get results!

Motivation is the key, and if you are lacking in that, then nothing works better than prayer, asking God to give you that motivation.  You need to have a vision in mind of the goal that you want to achieve!  Whatever your circumstances for being overweight, be sure it is there for a reason.  When you find a goal that is truly more important than your reasons for being overweight, then you will have the motivation you need to lose the unwanted pounds.  If you are not progressing, than what you think is more important is not really.  If it were than you would be succeeding.  So if you are trying to lose weight because you ‘want to be alive for your family’, but you are not making much progress in your weight loss, than you really have to do some deep soul searching, or get counselling, to find out ‘why not?’.  Weight loss is all about the psychological issues more than the physical.   Overall, it is a small percentage of people who are overweight for medical reasons over psychological reasons.  If there is anything about your reasons for being there or your lack of motivation that you do not understand you need to pray about it; and get counselling if necessary!

These important lessons about weight loss, I have found can be applied to other areas of my life as well.  I am learning so much about how to be a strong, capable, independent person.  This weight-loss program has changed me in more ways than just the physical.

Christmas 1992 I was in a major auto accident that changed my life.  I was the passenger in a car with my (then) fiancĂ© on an icy highway in central Ontario.  It was Boxing Day (in Canada that is December 26th, the day after Christmas).  We were on our way north to visit his family for the remainder of the holiday season.  It is a trip that typically took us 3 hours.  On this particular day we were about half way there when we drove around a large turn in the road, and suddenly we in the midst of a 6 car pile-up.  They had to use the jaws-of-life to cut us out.  The rescue team told us that we were extremely lucky for many reasons, but one reason being that our car was a rag-top convertible.  Though our car was totalled, it was strong enough to protect us from being crushed.  If it was not for the grace of God and that well built vehicle I would not be sitting here typing this to you right now.  In the emergency room later that evening, my fiancĂ© said to me “Now you know why that road is called The Highway to Heaven”.  I said to him “Oh great, so now you tell me!”.

My life changed in so many ways that day. I could, literally, write a book on the spin-off that affects my life to this day.  For months after I was almost completely bedridden.  I was able to get up and about but it would take quite a while and I needed help to do so.  Getting to the bathroom alone or putting my clothes on without help was impossible for weeks after the accident.  It took a long time for me to recover.  I remember the day that I finally went to the bathroom alone.  Then I came out and walked toward my bed, sat down on the edge and put my own clothes on… by myself!  It took me quite some time to achieve all this… but I did it!  Just me, with no help from anyone!  I truly and honestly felt like I could conquer the world.  I sat there alone, crying with joy and said out loud “look out world. I am back and there’s no stopping me now”.  I called everyone I could think of to tell them how excited I was.  I got responses that raged from “Yea, Ok… good for you” with a tone of “so what?” to “Yea OK… good for you” with a tone of “I’m so proud of you and so happy for you”; to a sarcastic “some of us have been doing that for quite some time now”.  Yea, I know there’s always the comedian in the bunch, especially in my family!

My point is that it was a small thing in my life, yet it was not!  It was huge because it got me one more step further along!  Just like each pound lost on my weight-loss journey,  it is a big deal!  There are no small achievements.  Each step is important to changing the whole you and to getting yourself closer to your destination!  Weight loss is not just about changing your body shape, your weight, or your clothing size.  It’s about changing who you are on the inside.  There is only one right way to change you and it has to be done in 3 parts; body, mind, and spirit!  If you do not complete all 3 parts, or if you do a flimsy job on anyone of the 3, than the whole package will not be complete or have strength.  You need to set your goals.  You need to know the steps to achieve them, and the route you need to take to get there!  If you do not know some of this information than you need to reach out to someone who can guide you in the right steps.  That is what I did, and continue to do, each time I reached a road block or a fork in the road.  Learning to reach out was a road block in itself for me.  I have finally learned that reaching out to others is not a weakness and it does not mean that I am not smart enough.  My support system is vital to my progress; which in itself was also a step to be achieved; something I had to build.

We could have gone a different route for that trip north on Boxing Day 1992, but we did not because it would take an extra hour.  Being a snowy Ontario winter day we did not want to be driving any longer than necessary.  But, guess what?  For an extra hour, my whole life would, likely, have turned out completely different!  My lessons were these: Know what you want, do not be afraid of hard work, or how much time it takes to get there; and never, ever pay attention to the negative people that will try to make you feel bad, tell you lies or hold you back.

Recently there was something that made me feel like I just passed an important mile marker.  It was a small step, yet a big turn in the road for me.  I have a friend that has blessed me more than I deserve to get from one person.  However, he has also hurt me more times than I can count.  No matter how many times people let you down, it never gets easier.  I have shed way more tears over one person than he should ever have gotten from me.  Letting go of this weight, I have come to see in the midst of my tears, is vital if I am to continue.  It can only be done through forgiveness... of myself as much as him.  I have come to realize that I have to let go of a very big weight that is keeping me anchored in the past.  Life goes on and I will survive and be OK because God never leaves me, even for an instant!  Despite the hurt, my friend will forever be in my heart, and will forever be a vital person in the progress of my journey thus far.  He was a stop along the way where I have gathered some important things to take with me.  Things like perseverance, character, hope, faith, forgiveness, determination, and strength.  I have also unloaded some unwanted things.  Items such as anger, hatred, fear, shame, hurt, hopelessness, and guilt.

So, my goals for the next day or two… is to get through my next dentist appointment, to get the mountain of laundry done that has piled up, and to spend extra quiet time with God as to recover from the last big pothole that got in the way.  Look out world, here I come!  It’s all a matter of perspective; which in itself, for me, was something else I had to learn along the way.  Who is to say what is truly a small step, or what is a big one when each step in the right direction will get you closer to God?  For directions you will not need a map.  All you will need is your Bible.  I will continue to keep my focus looking ahead to God because I never know when just around the next bend God will have my greatest blessings waiting for me.

~~Dear God~~ I pray that You will never let me leave the path that You have laid out for me.  Let each and every step be taken forward, toward You.  Do not let any road block, pot hole, or pit stop be wasted.  Use each and every one to bring blessings to me and glory to Your name.  I thank You, Father, for this wonderful journey that You have chosen for me no matter how difficult it is for me.  In Jesus name, AMEN.
