Great Writers Series: Publish

~~ 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) ~~  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

by Carley Cooper

We’re working on habit number thirteen in the 15 Habits of Great Writers challenge.  Just to recap for those new to this series, so far the habits we’ve talked about are: Declare, Believe, Initiate, Practice, Prepare, Steal, Start Ugly, Build, Connect, Share Others Work, Declutter, and Provoke

The next habit of great writers, our challenge host, Jeff Goins, tells us is to Publish.  OK, seriously; Goins has finally thrown a challenge at me that I can’t do right now.  At least, not in full.  All the other tests, I had either already done, or I did it when asked to do (and got great devotional messages to prove it).  This task, isn’t quite so quick at being completed.  He says “The amateur doesn’t understand this.  And let’s be honest: There’s a bit of amateur in all of us, isn’t there?  We struggle with this discipline of sharing our work.  All because of the most potent enemy of art: fear.”

It’s human nature to fear the unknown.  We’re afraid of everything; even success half the time.  Goins tells us to stretch ourselves.  Get over it already and share the fruits of our labour!  We are to publish something; and it needs to be more than another blog post.  It should be a manuscript, article, ebook; something.  Anything.  However, all my works are incomplete.  I have my ‘big’ manuscript project half done.  Actually, I’m thinking more than half, but that, in itself, probably tells me that it’s half or less!  I have no doubt that there’s more to this than meets the eye.  Anyway, I have another that will likely be an ebook, that is also not completed.  Another ebook started; and several ideas for more.  But nothing that is far enough along to publish.

Is this really the fear he’s talking about?  I wasn’t really thinking about this as fear of sharing.  I really thought it was about not being finished my projects yet.  As I sit here on my couch with my laptop in front of me working on this blog post, I’m learning a lesson.  It seems that part of my anxiety is indeed about fear.  Wow!  Who knew?!  Goins was right.  Good job, Dude!  Thanks for helping.  Oh and as a side note, congrats on being a new daddy!

God has led me through so much, and fear is just one of those things.  I am a survivor in so many ways, and I have the SurvivorsVoices support group to prove it.  I’ve learned that if I am to be a success then I have to wait for God’s leading.  Conquering the ghosts is only half the problem.  As much as I’ve over come, and I am proud of myself for those accomplishments, I still have a lot more to achieve and learn.  I can defeat anything with God’s help.  I will publish, when His timing says it is so.

As it’s turned out, this challenge is a two part trial.  First part, kicking fear habit.  Secondly, following God as He leads me to share my work.  When that day happens, and I can share my completed work I will shout it from the rooftops; and write an awesome devotional message about it.  I am confident that it is not too far away.  In the mean time, so I don’t keep kicking myself for not completing a challenge, and to take that first step outside of my comfort zone... which is always the first thing God will have us do when we are growing... I will tell you a few things about my manuscript.  As it stands right now:
  • The title is Cocoa with Jesus (there may be some slight adjustment to that later such as Drinking Cocoa with Jesus, or I Drank Cocoa with Jesus.)
  • It is the story of my life
  • It is divided into four parts (the book, not my life)
  • The first 3 parts are to provide information that will help others in similar situations, and help readers understand the story of my life
  • The first part is about mental illness
  • The second part is about abuse
  • The third part is about how it feels (the mental illness and abuse).  This part is important as it will tie in with the very end of the book.  It will show how it felt to finally be released and into the arms of Jesus.
  • The forth part is my story.
So, to fulfil the challenge for today, at least in part, here is the Preface of my manuscript; as it stands right now (remember there is work to be done on it yet)...
PREFACE
It was sometime early 2007, and I was on the phone with Paul.  So, ‘Who’s he’, you ask?  Well, our relationship falls somewhere between friends and ex’s.  We’re not together any more; that ship has long since sailed, but we have managed to salvage a friendship.  As usual, we were laughing our way through our conversation.  For years, we even giggled our way through many of our arguments.  Of course, there were lots of discussions that were nowhere near as warm and fuzzy as this one.  As a matter of fact there were times when we practically clobbered each other over the head to get a point across.
This particular day, I was talking to him, yet again, about ‘the book’.  It is the same book that I had talked about to him for years.  The book, that ‘maybe I’ll write some day’.  I hit a nerve with him.  He said to me, in a rather stern and snappy voice, “Carley you have to shut up talking about this book and either write it or give up the idea”.
He called me “Carley” even though that is not my given name.  I told him how I had always wanted a nickname.  I always thought it showed ‘extra love’.  I’m not even sure that I really knew what that idea meant.  I just always knew that women who were called “Honey”, “Sweet Pea”; or “Baby” by their mates, or even parents, had something special that I did not have.  For the life of me I couldn’t figure out what that missing bond could be, but I wished my whole life that I could have it.  Paul came up with a myriad of pet names, but “Carley” was the main one; and  it really did make me feel special.  After a while, though, others picked up on it too; and it stuck.  Though the real ‘glue’ didn’t take affect with others until after we broke up.  I didn’t want to let it go.  I missed hearing it all the time.  Suddenly “Carla” seemed all wrong.  So I made a point of reminding people that all my friends call me “Carley”.  Not that I really had many friends at that time in my life, but I’ll get around to that later.  Though, I wasn’t aware of it at the time, God’s was leading me; and it would come to symbolize so much more than just a simple nick name.
We finished our conversation; I hung up the phone and thought to myself “Huh.  I wonder who rattled his cage this morning?  He didn’t have to snap at me.
Then it hit me.  “Oh my gosh, he’s right.  He is so right.  I have to make a decision.  Do I really want to write this book about my life?
There was only one answer.  “Yes.  Yes, I do want to write this book.  So I am making the decision right here, right now that I am going to write a book about my life.
“OK, so I’m writing a book.  Now what?  If I’m doing it, I’m doing it right.  There’s not going to be any half hearted, unprofessional type work.
I thought for a minute.  I realized the first step was to pray about it.  I didn’t know why this was the first step, but I knew it was.  God was whispering to me again.  I didn’t have a relationship with Him yet; but I have learned, since, that God has always been by my side guiding me.  I just had to learn to listen to Him.  I’ve also learned that unless God is at the center of everything in my life, as the most important priority; things won’t work out in my favor.
So I said a prayer to God, and found myself being completely surprised at what I heard coming out of my mouth:
Dear God, please help me write this book.  Please make it a book that will; one, show Your awesome grace and glory through the telling of my story of...
Then, I got stuck.  My first thought was “triumph over tragedy.”  However, I knew if I asked for “tragedy” than I would likely get it.  How did I know this?  God was telling me.  Somewhere inside me I knew that God is faithful and loyal to the very last detail.  “Tragedy”, I decided, was much too strong a word.  I need a new word.  What word?  Then it hit me... “Trauma!”   I figured trauma is hard times, but not as bad as a tragedy.  I mean, tragedy is terrible, awful things... people dying, getting cancer, kids getting hurt... really dreadful stuff.  I didn’t want to write a book so badly that people would have to go through that kind of thing; especially if it was going to be my fault.
So I continued with my prayer, “Dear God, make my book a story that will show Your awesome grace and glory through my story of triumph over trauma.  Secondly, make it a story that will help people with mental illness see that there is hope.  Thirdly, help those who live with people with mental illness gain information and understanding that will help their lives and relationships.  Fourth, help relieve some of the stigma that the public has about mental illness.  The stigma against mental illness makes living with it much harder than it needs to be.  Next, that it would be therapy for me.  I pray these things in Jesus name, AMEN.”
One day all will be revealed; every thought, word, and deed.  I thought that, if I tell my story now, the hardest things will be revealed in circumstances that I get some say about.  Plus, if I keep my heart in the right place, I figured, it could help a lot of people at the same time.  A story; a true story, that is a good testimony with the potential of helping people and leading others to Jesus cannot be told by leaving out bad things or keeping secrets; especially to have goals, such as mine, be met efficiently.  As I thought about some of the details in my life and how I felt about them I realized that there was a lot of pain and frustration underlying it all.  I was fearful of hurting those I love the most; and very worried of letting them down or disappointing them in some way.  I was also troubled that it might end up sounding like someone who was simply lashing out in anger toward the world.  This was absolutely not the story I wanted to tell the world.  Deep inside, I knew that this is actually God’s story; and writing it without Him is impossible.  I wanted my story to show believers and non-believers, alike, the reality that is God, and that Jesus is alive today and He loves each and every one of us that believes in Him.
So, later with all this in mind, I also asked God to please help me tell this story, all of it; in a way that will not hurt those I love the most.  Then, the final thing I prayed for was that He would lead me to the people that I would need in my life to complete this project.Little did I know at that point how much work there was to preparing to write this book; and I don’t just mean studying and learning about the writing process.  First, there was work to be done on and inside me.  God had an incredible plan to let that happen.  I was about to take an amazing life-altering journey; one that would be worth writing about!
Over the next couple of years or so I came up with ideas, and made stacks of notes and plans.  I learned later, as well, that nothing we will ever do that means getting close to God or doing His work will be done without interference from Satan.  Then, right on cue, the enemy started to influence my thinking because I started to doubt myself.  I wondered “Should I really be doing this?  Is it just a pipe dream that will never come to be?  I don’t have professional writing education?  Is this beyond me?  Will anyone want to read it?  If they do, will they take me seriously, or just laugh at me?
Then, also right  on cue, God sent me confirmations to ensure me that writing my story is the right decision.  He did that by sending people to tell me as much.  Within a two week period in the summer of 2009, I had several people suggest to me that I should be writing a book about my life; because, they said, it would inspire others.  None of these people knew that I had already hoped to do that, or that others had told me the same thing.  Not only that, but I felt that all these individuals were in such positions in life that I should, no doubt, highly respect their opinions.  God didn’t stop there, though, with the encouragement.  I started writing blogs; and the followers were loving what I was writing.  I heard, all the time, how much I inspired people, and that I had a true gift for writing.
As I think back, now, on the story that would have been told if I had started writing back when the decision was first made; I realize that it would have been the hashing out of a lot of pain, hurting everyone that I love, and accomplishing nothing that would help people or lead them to God.  The journey that I’ve been through since the day I made the decision to turn my dream into a reality, has made this a vastly different story.  Now, it’s a story about God.  One by one, God erased all the uncertainties in my mind.
After those first couple of years writing notes, life started to get busy; which was a great excuse to use for the following two years as to why I wasn’t actually sitting down writing my manuscript.  Remember those people that I asked God to put in place to help me?  Well, the next one to help me entered the scene.  It was my friend, and author, Brenda Wood, who contacted me after she read one of my blogs where I mentioned, for what was likely the 5,267th time, about this book that I intend on writing.  Her email told me about a writing challenge that she was entering.  She suggested that I also join this challenge and write my book… in one month!  Next month, November!  But that wasn’t all of it.  See it was only about four days until the end of the month.
I immediately came up with a list of reasons why this was not possible.  “I’m not ready”, I said.  “It’s way too soon.  I have much more preparation, reading and research to do.
“Forget all that stuff”, she said.  “Just start writing.  Worry about all that later.God was telling my heart that “It’s time to stop puttering around and making excuses.  It’s time to get started.
“OK, Lord”, I said.  “I’ll do it, but I need Your help.  I need You to tell me what to write.  I cannot do this on my own.
I spent the next few days reading, planning and preparing as best as I could for the start date. I started writing on November 1, 2011.  By the 30th I had met, and surpassed, the challenge goal of fifty thousand words.  I was declared one of the winners; even though my first draft wasn’t finished, but I kept on writing.
As I held the certificate that I was given, it hit me “I am a writer.  I’m a real writer!  Thank You, Lord.”  I have to say that this was an incredible shock to me.  It never would have been a career choice that I would have ever chosen for myself.  God led me to this path, and now that I’m here I can’t imagine being anywhere else.  Way to many writers, poets, artists, musicians, pastors, and even truck drivers don’t ever have the courage to chase their dreams, let alone share their gift, to change lives with it.  I’ve learned that the first step in achieving a dream, is to acknowledge that you have it.  How can others believe it about me, if I don’t believe it myself?  This was an important lesson.  I am a writer.  The next step is to trust God, and jump!  If you don’t land where you expect, that’s OK, because He will catch you and set you down in a place that is awesome.  I am honored to be given the opportunity to share my words with you.  I hope my story, and my words, touch your heart and help you.
Well, now that it’s time to start telling you about my life, where do I even begin?  It sounds rather corny, or maybe it sounds more like common sense.  Sometimes, I’m not sure there’s a difference; but “at the beginning” keeps coming to mind.

~~ Dear God ~~  Thank You for the journey that You lead each of us on, that brings us closer to You each and every day.  Thank You for loving me enough to want to change me and help me grow.  You are always me protecting me.  I have no reason to fear.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Great Writers Series: Share

~~ John 3:16 (NIV84) ~~  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

by Carley Cooper

It’s day Ten of the 15 Habits of Great Writers challenge.  Technically, it’s day eleven; but I found myself a little busy yesterday.  So now I'm playing catch up!  Just to recap for those new to this series, so far the habits we’ve talked about are: Declare, Believe, Initiate, Practice, Prepare, Steal, Start Ugly, Build and Connect

The tenth habit of great writers our challenge host, Jeff Goins, tells us is to ‘Share Others Work’.  He also says “Great writers share.  Not just their own knowledge, ideas, and expertise.  They also share the work of others and credit them accordingly.  And ironically, paradoxically, they ultimately benefit from their own generosity.”  The minute I read the challenge that he gave us today “Find someone whose message we need to hear and share it…”, I instantly two names came to mind.

The first is Paul Duarte and his new book Shakedown.  As a friend of Paul, I can say that he has never done anything small, and fear is not a word he’s familiar with.  He pushes the boundaries beyond expectation in everything he does.  Even his physical disability hasn’t slowed him down.  Shakedown, is no exception.  This is a book that will, no doubt, cause a lot controversy; and may even get him in some hot water.  Duarte is a newbie in the book writing world, but shares his own incredible true story very well.  It is a tale of one man’s strength through the overwhelming trauma and aftermath of the murder of a dear friend.  The story leads you through, as the cover says; “murder, police deceptions, lies and extortion.”  You will get a glimpse of what it feels like to see an investigation from the inside view of a murder suspect.  It’s a view of authorities who will stop at nothing, including the law to get their man; except it’s the wrong man!  You will be left with your mouth dropped open in shock at the lengths some will go to in order to make a situation turn out the way they want it to.  Shakedown is exciting and will leave your heart thumping!  The most incredible part is that Paul comes through it all still holding onto his faith.

The second name that came to mind that has a message to share is Jesus.  No greater story has ever been lived, or told.  The title of the book is The Holy Bible.  It is the written and living Word of God.  It is filled with excitement, murder, deceptions, lies, war, fear, betrayal, sex scandals, drama, intrigue, love stories, action, suspense, and so much more.  Yet, it is the greatest guide ever published on how to live life to its fullest.  It is a manual  on how to be everything from a good parent to a successful entrepreneur.  No question that you will ever need answered, cannot be found within its pages.  At the end of the story, the whole world has been given the greatest gift ever given.  Eternal salvation.  That’s because God’s Word also tells us about His awesome love, grace and mercy.  It’s a story of a love so great that a Son, named Jesus, was sacrificed in order to save everyone else.  What greater story is there?  It’s one that every person on the planet needs to hear.

~~ Dear God ~~  Thank You for the most incredible story ever told.  Thank You for all that we have gained from it.  I know that one day every person will get to hear that story.  One day every knee shall bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.  Praise You, Father, for this great gift.  I pray, also, that You will help Paul in his quest to get his story told; and that his relationship with Jesus will be strengthened, and others will be helped and lead to You as a result.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Shattered Treasures

~~ Isaiah 40:29-31 (NIV84) ~~  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

I used to own a tall glass curio cabinet.  It was about six feet high, two and a half feet wide, and one and a half feet deep.  It attacked me one day!

The basic frame was wood but the doors and sides were glass, and the back of the cabinet was a large mirror.  Inside were five or six glass shelves.  I had this thing filled to its limits with all sorts of treasures.  I mean, it was packed!  Every piece in it was made of some sort of glass, ceramic, porcelain or crystal.  There was everything from wine glasses, to ornaments; and some special things that I had collected or had been given as gifts over my lifetime.

No one told me there was a weight limit on a glass shelf.  Someone should have posted a warning sign.  I opened the door one day to put something inside on the top shelf, and the shelf collapsed.  Then, so did the next one underneath and the one under that one all the way to the bottom.  In the matter of seconds, the glass shelving and all the items inside showered out of the cabinet onto me, and down the floor in pieces around me.

I screamed and my boyfriend, Paul, came wobbling over to see what the noise was.  He was a disabled guy so he couldn’t move fast.  He looked me standing there in my bare feet, shorts and a tank top surrounded by a huge pile of broken glass.  Thankfully I didn’t get any cuts, but it was only by the grace of God that I didn’t.  Paul had warned me at least a thousand times that if I didn’t start wearing shoes he was going to staple them to my feet.  Footwear on a regular basis was an issue for me, but I wished this day that I would have listened to him.  I just looked at him in the midst of my dilemma and started to cry.

“Don’t move a muscle” he said.

He went to get some clean up supplies and I waited for him to rescue me from my predicament.   When it was all cleaned up I managed to salvage a few items; but most were completely useless because they shattered.  I ended up with a big box of broken glass to throw in the garbage.  So many of my special things were tossed into the trash dumpster outside our apartment building, and I was so disappointed.  What good are they if they’re broken?

Have you ever felt like one of those broken treasures that was tossed out because it was broken?   I have.  I feel it all the time.  How many things in your life have broken you?  My shattered pieces come from  a lot of abuse, divorce, Bipolar Disorder, addictions, loneliness, self hatred, a number of childhood traumas, social phobia, a lot of illness (especially as a child), the pain of being childless (not by choice) in a world built for parents; and so much more.  Before I knew the concept of having a relationship with Christ, I led a very worldly and sinful life.  Paul and I didn’t work out as a couple; but we are still good friends.  Despite our issues, I have always been thankful that he never rejected me because of my brokenness.  For the same reason I felt I had no right to reject him because of his disability.  Who am I to say what is broken or what is acceptable?

There are many others who have judged me or rejected me because of things I’ve said or done; because of my brokenness.  The pain is overwhelming.  Truthfully, I am still learning how to deal with it.  People no longer want to be a friend; they stop loving me, they decide that they just want to wash their hands of me because I’m just not worth the trouble or that I come with too much history, or I am just too broken.  Well, I’m human.  That means I am broken.  Unless you were born yesterday, each and every one of us has a history which includes pain and suffering.  Not one of us has avoided hitting the floor to become shattered.  God made us to have relationship with each other; and it is necessary for a full productive, healthy life and spirit.  However, I can’t depend on others to rescue me every time I get in the midst of a chaos.  Though, I can’t help but wonder why it seems, sometimes, that I have a special talent for getting into so many mess’s.  Anyway, letting go of the need for the approval of others is one of the hardest lessons I am learning; but then, they are all hard lessons, or they wouldn’t be worth learning.

Others may judge me harshly at times, but my own personal battle is that I judge myself even harder.  When I am down and broken I blame myself, and beat myself up the most.  I am hardest on myself always.  Why is that?  I’m not sure I know the answer really, but I think many of us are like that.  I do know that it’s about learning to forgive.  I can and have forgiven other people for many bad things.... everything from betrayal by a loved one to forgiving my abusers.  But, forgiving myself seems to be a much harder task to accomplish.  I have learned, though, that I never stop striving to get closer to Jesus.  I want to be like Him so much.  I have found a strength and determination inside myself that I never would have known was there if I hadn’t found Jesus.  Then, again, without Jesus in my life, it wasn’t there.  Pushing myself beyond my limits and the willpower to never quit has become a blessing more times than I can count.  It is overwhelmingly exhausting; but I have found that it is necessary, and a challenge that makes me feel very good once I’ve reached the goal.

The most important thing that I have to remember though is the point that Jesus is carrying me.  I am not alone.  It is His approval that I need, not that of others.  He has great plans for my future.  If I have a dream, it’s because He put it there.  If I can’t let it go, it’s because He is constantly reminding me not to; and He does keep reminding me.  The pattern is there.  The stubborn and impatient part of me is sometimes fearful that it may not happen (those would be some fruits of the Spirit that are still works in progress in my life).  That’s when the enemy tells me lies such as it is all my fault, that I’ve messed up way too many times, that I have crossed that ‘line of no return’.  I should have known better, I tell myself.  I am stronger than that.  There is no excuse for not pushing harder, no matter how hard I already pressed forward.  There is no reason why I have to be broken.  If I wasn’t so broken, I wouldn’t be in this mess; maybe someone would love me.  But, Jesus does not reject me no matter how broken I am, and even when everyone else does.  He knows my history; even before it happened, yet He loves me anyway.  No matter how much I cry, or how many temper tantrums I throw, or how many pieces I am broken into; He loves me anyway.  As a matter of fact He dries my tears, He lets me be crabby and comforts me; and He tells me that I am a treasure and has already forgiven me!  His comfort is that even though I am broken it doesn’t matter.  I am still useful because He can fix it!

How many people have rejected or judged you for something?  Have you hit rock bottom?  It’s a very cold and lonely place, isn’t it?!  Was there anyone to save you?  Reach up to take Jesus’ hand.  He loves you the same way.  He knows what you’re going through.  He is there to save and fix you always.  This video below is a song written and performed by my friend Chris Blakley.  It is called I May Be Down.  It has helped get me a very rough patch lately.  Listen to the lyrics.  It will tell you all that you need to know.  You can’t give up.  Don’t let anyone or anything keep you down.  Hold on to Jesus and that relentless drive inside to keep pushing forward.  For me, sometimes that means I have to sit and listen to this song over and over for half the afternoon before the message sinks in; but I don’t ever quit!

Hey friends, do me a favor if you would be so kind... Go to Chris's YouTube page, click 'Like', leave him a positive message and tell him Carley sent you!

~~ Dear God ~~  Thank You for never giving up on me.  I am never permanently broken, never defeated, never rejected with You.  Thank You, Jesus; for the strength, courage, hope, drive, determination, passion to never give up.  And thank You for the hope.  Please, do not ever let me lose it.  ~I pray in Jesus name, AMEN.

Oh, and one more thing, Lord... on a more personal note, thank You for Chris and all that he does for us here in Barrie.  Please continue to provide him with the resources he needs to come to see us every month.  Thank You for his talent, his incredible energy, his love for Jesus, his gift for preaching and this awesome song You gave him.  Please let it be as much of a blessing to many others as it has been to me.  ~I pray in Jesus name, AMEN.

Angels: To Serve and Protect

~~ Psalm 91:11-14 (NIV84) ~~  For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.  You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.  “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

One of many Angels in my collection

It’s official!  The angel series of blogs I’ve been writing have taken on a life of their own.  I really did innocently started out just to share in a three article series a few interesting angel stories.  Then, it kept growing.  Again, this week I’m finding myself writing more about angels.  This time, at the request of a reader who wanted to know more about what the bible says about angels.  I’m wondering if this, the seventh article, will be the final one.  Since I always pray that God leads me in my writing and the messages I share, and seven is His favorite I believe that it He’s been the life behind this all along.

Here’s a brief overview of the series so far:
  • In the first post (Angels From Heaven) I talked about how people in our lives can be like angels sent by God to help us.  I shared a poem I wrote to someone special in my life who has been like an angel for me.
  • In the second post (Who Is Your Guardian Angel?) I talked about how God has given us angels, celestial beings, to protect us; to keep us from  danger.  Sometimes, if we are paying close enough attention, we will even get to see our angels as they’re digging us out of a pit that we got ourselves into!  My friend and author, Paul Duarte, experienced this first hand; literally!  As a Worship Melodies Guest Author, he shared his personal true story of being rescued by an angel from a situation that could have been fatal, on a cold winter day.
  • In the third post (I Think I Just Saw An Angel) I talked about how God uses angels, of all types, to redirect us and keep us from getting into dangerous situations; or to keep us from wandering into a place that was never in His will for us to be.  I shared my own angel story about a woman who pulled me back when I was about to go ‘over the edge’.
  • Then, in the fourth post (The Warm and Fuzzy Side of Angels) I talked about how our angels are there to give us comfort in our time of need.
  • The fifth article (Angels: A Jack-of-All-Trades!) I gave a brief overview of what the bible says about angels.
  • Finally, in the last article (How My Angel Fell Off the Edge of Heaven) I talked about fallen angels; specifically how I feel like I am the fallen angel in a painful situation in my own life, and how different the world looks when someone you love sees you in a different light.
In addition to all the purposes that they serve that we’ve already covered there are other interesting points as well.  The bible tells us that God sends out His angels to guard us (For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways ~ Psalm 91:11 (NIV84)) .  God sent angels to protect Daniel by having them shut the mouths of the lions so Daniel wouldn’t be killed by the lions (My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, ~ Daniel 6:22 TNIV)  Now that’s pretty awesome protection, and it wasn’t Daniel’s only interaction with an angel!

We are also told that there are those here on earth who are actually angels and we may not realize it or recognize them as angels.  We should be careful of what we say and how we treat others because we could in fact be interacting with an angel.  ~Hebrews 13:2 (TNIV) says “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”

We are told that angels will take care of us when we need it (Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. ~Matthew 4:11 TNIV).

Angels will point us in the right direction when we need it.  I mean, literally!  They’re better than a GPS any day.  Just ask Phillip!  ‘Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.”‘  ~Acts 8:26 TNIV

They will also help get you out of a mess if you find yourself in a sticky situation and God needs you to be somewhere else.  That’s what happened to Peter when an angel sprung him out of prison!  (But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out.  “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.” ~Acts 5:19-20 TNIV)

God’s angels are also worriers and fight in battles, and He will also send an angel ahead of Him in the last days to announce His coming, when He comes down from Heaven to gather His children together to separate them from those of the world.  (For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.  ~1 Thessalonians 4:16 TNIV)

There is so much that we can know about God’s angels that can help us feel secure.   We can have a secure sense of protection because God loves us so much that He gives that to us.  God has armies of angels working for Him.  They are there to worship and obey Him.  Angels can be visible or invisible, they can appear as humans or shiny and full of glory, and they can be good or evil.  They can be guardians, guide, messengers, encouragers, comforters, attendants, deliverers, teachers, providers,  and rescuers.  Whatever God needs them to do for Him or for us, they are there to worship and serve.  (The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.  Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.  Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.  Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion.  Praise the LORD, my soul. ~Psalm 103:19-22 TNIV)

~~ Dear God ~~  You are so awesome.  There is no need that we have that You have not provided for.  Thank You for the angels that You surround me with every day that help keep me encouraged, protected, comforted and provide me with everything I need to keep me on the path that leads toward You.  Please don’t let me ever leave this path.  I want to be headed toward You and getting closer to You with each and every day.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Angels: A Jack-of-All-Trades!

This is the fifth and final article in this current series on angels.  In the first post (Angels From Heaven) I talked about how people in our lives can be like angels sent by God to help us.  I shared a poem I wrote to someone special in my life who has been like an angel for me.  In the second post (Who Is Your Guardian Angel?) I talked about how God has given us angels, celestial beings, to protect us; to keep us from  danger. In the third post (I Think I Just Saw An Angel) I talked about how God uses angels, of all types, to redirect us and keep us from getting into dangerous situations; or to keep us from wandering into a place that was never in His will for us to be.  I shared my own angel story about a woman who pulled me back when I was about to go ‘over the edge’.  Then, in the fourth post (The Warm and Fuzzy Side of Angels) I talked about how our angels are there to give us comfort in our time of need.

So with all of this angel talk about how they interact with us; what does the bible say about them?  First of all, did you know that the bible mentions the word ‘Angel’ 290 times!  Now, that’s a lot of angel talk!  So, for certain, it’s not possible to go into much depth in an article or two.  Many volumes can be written before we could  really come to understand the full purpose that they have in our lives; and you can be sure that they are indeed important, or God would not have created them (Colossians 1:16).   The list of questions that we have about angels can go on and on:
  • What are angels?
  • Where did they come from?
  • Are our loved ones who have passed on, now angels?
  • What do they look like?  Do they have bodies?
  • What’s the deal with wings and halo’s?
  • What are their purpose?
  • Are all angels members of the ‘Good Guys’ team?
Any one of these questions, and more, can be a whole study on its own.  The word ‘Angel’, in the Old Testament, comes from the Hebrew word Mal’ak, meaning ‘messenger, ambassador’.   In the New Testament, from the Greek word Aggelos, also meaning ‘messenger’.  On a side note, I highly recommend the FREE bible study software eSword to assist in doing these types of in-depth studies.  The bible talks about angels as celestial spirits, and gives us many examples of appearances from angels.

Angels are referred to as messengers (Luke 1:11-20, Luke 1:26-38, Luke 2:9-14), ambassadors (2 Chronicles 35:21, Isaiah 30:4), servants, worriers (Revelation 12:7), and they even go into battle (Daniel 10:13, 10:21, 12:1).  But the list doesn’t stop there.  Angels have many references:
  • the Angel of the Lord
  • the Angel of God
  • His Angel
  • An Angel
  • Mine Angel
  • An Angel of God
  • Angel from Heaven
  • Strong Angel
  • Mighty Angel
  • Holy Angels
  • The Archangel
  • Michael the Archangel
  • Michael and His Angels
  • Gabriel
They hold different forms; such as Seraphim (Isaiah 6:2), Cherubim (Hebrews 9:5), and Archangels (Jude 1:9).

Sometimes ordinary people (Luke 7:24), priests (Malachi 2:7), prophets (Malachi 3:1), and church leaders (Revelation 1:20) are also referred to as messengers of the Lord.

People and angels are two separate groups (Matthew 22:30).  Angels are celestial beings, but they can sometimes appear to be human (Genesis 19:1-22).  If God wants you to be able to see them, He will open your eyes so you can see them (2 Kings 6:17).  Not all angels are said to have wings.  We’re told that Seraphim's and Cherubim have wings (Isaiah 6:1-3); but we are never told that they are the cute plump, babies that we see in pictures.  The bible only ever refers to them as adults.  Nowhere in the bible do people have the response of pinching chubby cheeks or playing with kids as their response when an angel appears to them.  They are stronger than man, but not invincible (Psalm 103:20, 2 Peter 2:11).  They are wiser than people, but they’re still students; they are not all-knowing like God(2 Samuel 14:20; Matthew 24:36).  They are more decent, gracious, righteous and dignified than man; but not perfect like Jesus (Daniel 9:21-23, 10:10-14).

Angels have a lot of purposes.  We’ve already talked about those people in our lives that are our angels.  We also noted how angels can protect and guide us, deliver messages and comfort us.  But that’s not all!  They also teach us things (Acts 7:52-53), provide us with material things (Genesis 21:17-20, 1 Kings 19:6), encourage and take care of us (Matthew 4:11, Acts 5:19-20), be an answer to prayer (Acts 12:1-17), and be there for believers when we are about to die (Luke 16:22).  They worship and praise God, and they carry out His will (Isaiah 6:1-3).

So, they sound pretty awesome; don’t they?!  But don’t get too excited about all this, just yet.  See, as great as they are we are not to worship them (Revelation 22:8-9).  Not all angels wear a white robe and polished halo.  And not all that do, are good guys.  They are not perfect; they can commit sin like the rest of us (2 Peter 2:4).  They can make the decision to choose God or reject Him (Jude 1:6).  Even those that cheer for the dark side are referred to as angels (Matthew 25:41).  As a matter of fact, Satan, being an expert in deceit, can disguise himself, or anything else he wishes to use, as something wonderful in order to trick us into sinning.  He’s referred to as the angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14).

For me, all this information boils down to one thing!  God loves us!  So, much that He makes sure we always have the support, guidance, protection, help, instructions, and the stuff that we need in our lives; for our whole life.  Our angels are with us always; from the time we are born until we are ready to walk through Heaven’s gates!  When God’s hands are full; He sends His angels to help.  They do so many things, fill so many purposes that I can only think of them as a Jack-of-All-Trades... perfectly trained in each and every trade by God Himself ... all because He loves us that much!

~~ Dear God ~~ You are all-knowing, invincible, and perfect.  Your glory and mercy is incomprehensible to us.  I have skills that can help me, and others in my life, accomplish many things; but they are but a drop in the ocean compared to all the training that You have given to the Jack-of-All-Trades workers.  You have done all this, and provided me with a team of angels to get me through this journey on earth until I can come home to be with Jesus forever.   Thank You for this Lord.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

This is the fourth article in this current series on angels. In the third post (I Think I Just Saw An Angel) I talked about how God uses angels, of all types, to redirect us and keep us from getting into dangerous situations; or to keep us from wandering into a place that was never in His will for us to be.  I shared my own angel story about an unknown woman who pulled me back when I was about to go ‘over the edge’.

So other than being our assistants, guides and protectors; are there any other hats that our angels wear?  Yes, our angels can also be sent to comfort us in times of need.  Whether we are depressed, grieving, sad, lonely, or just need some encouragement in a certain situation; our angels are there for us.  When our lives are in a place that’s less than perfect we often have a tendency to believe that we’re alone in the world.  Satan fills our minds with lies and questions that give us doubt and draw us further away from Jesus.  “I’m alone”, “No one loves me”, “I’ve sinned too much for God to forgive me”, “How is it possible that I can go on without my lost loved one?”, “I need a mate; I can’t go on being single”, “Why doesn’t God answer my prayers?”.

Every need that we have God can and will fulfill.  He will never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV84).  When you think you’re alone, you’re not.  When you know you can’t move on; you can and you will.  When you believe that you’ve crossed the line of forgiveness; you haven’t.  When you assume that He doesn’t hear you; He does.  And, He sends our angels to be with us so that they can comfort us and encourage us when we need it the most.  They help us get through the dark, cold tunnel and come out the other end into the warm light.  Just like Satan can whisper lies in our ear; our angels can whisper comforting things in our other ear.

I had an experience one day that helped me realize this message.  It was in church on a Sunday morning.  At the time of the alter call, I went forward to the prayer rail.  I was going through a very difficult time in my life.  I felt alone and lost.  I saw no hope of light in my future.  I knelt at the prayer rail and talked to God, crying the whole time about my troubles.  Of course, like everyone else kneeling before God at that moment, I wasn’t speaking aloud.  I was praying in my heart to Him.

As I prayed, I wondered “Does He even heard me at all?”

Why did this have to hurt so much?  Why does my troubles seem to be going on and on forever with no end in sight?  As in most churches, when people are at the prayer rail, other members of the church family will come forward and stand behind you, with their hands on your shoulders, to pray and support you.

On this particular Sunday, once the prayer time was over, I stood up wiping my tears, ready to go back to my seat.  The lady who was standing behind me hugged me and then whispered in my ear “I just wanted you to know that there was an angel standing right there in front of you”, as she pointed to the area directly in front of me on the other side of the rail.  “He really does hears your prayers”, she said.

I started to cry again.  How did she know what I was thinking about and praying for?  I hugged her and thanked her for telling me that.  I never asked her if she really saw an angel or if that was just a message of encouragement.  I’ve considered, since then, asking her; but the truth is, I don’t think I want to know.  Either way, God used that angel that I couldn’t see and He used this wonderful woman as another angel to send me a direct answer to my prayers.  I had angels on both sides of me that day and didn’t realize it; one I could see and one I couldn’t.  I thanked God for the fast reply.  Even email doesn’t always get delivered that fast!  Our angels are just like your favorite blanket when you need it; all warm and fuzzy, and an incredible source of comfort.  God handed me my blanket that day.  It kept me warm for a long time.

~~ Dear God ~~ You are so wonderful Lord.  You never leave us, you make sure our every single need is met.  Every tear I cry, You are there to wipe away.  Whenever I feel lonely or lost, You remind me that I am loved and never forgotten.  Each temper tantrum I have You calm me down and help me see that there are solutions.  You do this for each and every one of Your children, Lord.  Thank  you so much for the warm and fuzzy angels that you give me for warmth and comfort during all these trials.  Help me to never forget these things.  Help me to hear the whispers of my angels more clearly; and help me to block out the lies of the enemy.  In Jesus name;  AMEN.
