Great Writers Series: Build

~~ Romans 8:28 (NIV84) ~~  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

by Carley Cooper

It’s day eight of the 15 Habits of Great Writers challenge.  Just to recap for those new to this series, so far the habits we’ve talked about are: Declare, Believe, Initiate, Practice, Prepare, Steal and Start Ugly.  The eight habit of great writers our challenge host, Jeff Goins, tells us is to ‘Build’.

I read the challenge for today in the daily email about the Great Writers challenge.  It said:
The challenge
So let’s build something. You don’t need to start another project you’ll never finish. You already probably have enough of those. Instead,
I want you to do something truly creative:  I want you to finish something. Anything, really. Just pick a project — an essay, a blog post, maybe even a book — and finish it. Not tomorrow. Today.
So, my lesson for today is a little more light-hearted than the others.  I was writing something for my other blog, Tin Roof Sundae, with some humor in it, which is generally the mood I like to have for that site.  So, here is the piece I was working on in my spare time this week.  Ahhh, in case you missed it that would be joke number one here!  Spare time?!  Someone please message me with the definition of that.  Anyway, I finished building it.  I hope you enjoy it.

  1. Animal – (from the Muppets) ‘cause he’s just that cool!
  2. My Future Publisher – Hey, I gotta keep the faith going!
  3. My Next Doggie – Life is just not the same without daily canine kisses and a waggly tail greeting me at the door. I’m already thinking about names. Whatta ya think about ‘Joey’?  Cute, huh?!
  4. The Person Who Can Explain Men – On second thought, never mind.  That would require a saint.  I’m thinking that saints aren’t overly great in numbers these days.  It might be too hard to find one. Then again, God is in the miracle business.  Maybe if I pray...
  5. The Wire-Hanger Ferry – I know you exist.  I keep taking all the wire hangers from my closets and dumping them; yet I open a closet door and voila!  There’s another one.  Dude, you’re fired.  Your services are no longer needed!
  6. The Guy Who Can End Telemarketing Calls – FYI for telemarketers; when I say “No” and you keep talking and you’re saying anything other than “Good bye”, you just shot any chance of making a sale!
  7. Tigger – I want Tigger to come and live with me (As a single Christian woman, it would have to be strictly platonic though!)  I need the constant positive energy.  He’s just too  happy and too bouncy not to love!
  8. Idea Supplier – the Dude that has an endless supply of super-duper over-the-top awesome ideas for writing about... just for me and no one else!  Hey... God said to dream big and pray big!  So I am!  LOL
  9. My Future Husband – I know you’re worth the wait, but would you please hurry up and get here.  I really, really need you.
  10. Jesus - I know You’re worth the wait, but would You please hurry up and get here.  I really, really need You.

~~ Dear God ~~  Thank You for all the people you have brought into my life, and for all the ways that you have used them for me, and used me for them; even when it doesn’t seem to be happy.  I know all things happen for a reason, which will bring me blessings and show Your glory.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Great Writers Series: Prepare

~~ Colossians3:23 (NIV84) ~~  Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men

by Carley Cooper

It’s day five of the 15 Habits of GreatWriters challenge.  Just to recap for those new to this series:
  • On day one the assignment was ‘Declare’; that is to tell the world that ‘I am a Writer’.
  • Day two, was to Believe that ‘I am a Writer’.  The most important thing I need to do this is faith; in God, so that my fears can be overcome and His blessings will be free to flow.
  • Day three, was to Initiate that big dream project; such as a book.  For me, though, I found that it also meant initiating a part of myself that I’ve always kept hidden.
  • Day four was the day to Practice sharing with the world the words we put on paper.  Sometimes, this kind of practice is more about having faith in God to carry us through than it is about what others think about our writing skills.
The fifth habit of great writers Jeff Goins says is to ‘Prepare’.  The challenge in that item was to ‘ship’ something out by taking what we have written already, ask someone to proof read it, give “brutally honest critiques”; then to take that advice, make changes, rinse and repeat.  This is where I get nervous.  I’m not done ‘preparing’ enough to ask for feedback.  Jeff says:
You have something you want to share with the world.  Maybe it’s a book, a play, a piece of art, or something else.  Whether you have ten novels under your belt or you’re scared to start a blog, there’s work you’ve yet to create.  And for some reason, you’re still preparing for it.  Still waiting for your shot, telling yourself you’ll get to it… some day.  But the truth is you won’t.  Not really. Admit it: You’re stalling. Waiting for perfect, all the while letting good pass you by.
I read this in the article for today’s assignment.  As I read the part about “But the truth is you won’t”, I was shocked.  I actually said, out loud, while I’m sitting here alone in my apartment “What?!  Huh, where’s the faith in that?  What about that faith speech we got last week?”  Then, I realized; he could very well be right.  I keep working, and coming up with excuses why I’m not further along in my book writing project than I am.  He says that:
You know you’re preparing when:
  • You’re getting better every day.
  • People keep asking you, “When are you going to publish X?”
  • You’re building measurable momentum.
So on that note, and as I look back, I can see that I am making progress.  I do keep writing;
  • in two book projects (one is on the back burner as a secondary project but it’s there and slowly it’s also coming along.  The other is my ‘big project’; the one that has my whole heart in it.)
  • on blogs - Worship Melodies and Tin Roof Sundae; plus one on SparkPeople that I share with that community for the support that I need for my healthy living journey.
  • in my journals.  They’re private, but I still know that it’s good writing practice and I am growing from those also.
I get keep publishing articles on my blog sites.  I know from the feedback that I get:
  • that I’m getting better in my writing.
  • AND, that I am growing in my journey with God.
  • I do get people asking me about my book projects; and they’re wondering how far along I am to completion.  I do have faith that God has a plan for this book, simply because I know that He is leading me in this journey, not only to do the project but what to write.
  • that I am building some measureable momentum because as I go back and read past articles, I can see my progress in the writing and in my journey with God.  I get quite a bit of feedback from followers giving me encouragement and telling me how much I’m inspiring them.  I am so overwhelmingly grateful for you, my followers, because quite often it is you and your feedback that motivates me to keep writing.
My preparation, though it may be slow according to the timeline of some great writers or publishers, is moving along continually.  Though, it may seem sometimes that I am not as far along as I could be or should be, I am certain that I’m perfectly on track with God’s schedule.  I will indeed ‘ship’ my biggest book project for feedback  when it is ready.  There are portions of it that I need some feedback on very soon in order to continue writing.  I will be looking forward to the feedback on it.  I’m rather excited to hear what assessments that I will get.  I want to improve, and this kind of opinion is just the thing to help that happen.  It is the preparation that I’m doing for God, though, that is what will lead me to be the greatest writer that I can be.  Without God, no amount of success according to the worldly parameters of quality writing, numbers of books sold, or sales figures; on any project means anything.  Everything I do, I want to be for and about God.  The real preparation is about getting ready to spend eternity with Jesus.

~~ Dear God ~~  Thank You the preparation that You are doing for me, with me, and in me so that I will, not only be blessed in this world by helping others and bringing glory to Your name, but also be ready to spend eternity with You .  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Angels from Heaven

~~ Psalm 91:11-14 (NIV84) ~~  For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.  You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.  “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

Angels.  We see them in all sorts of places.  Plus, they seem to come in all shapes and sizes; much like people.  I’ve seen pictures of them as tall and thin wearing long flowing white gowns.  Some are males and some are females; all with beautiful large wings.  Then there’s the chubby little ones with cheeks so cute that you just want to pinch them.  But we don’t ever really see them in the realm of our real world.  Or do we?  There are many people out there who have stories that cannot be explained any other way.
God has assigned us angels that are with us all the time; kinda like body guards that stick with us for life.  The only difference is that they’re not about to clobber someone on our behalf like the body guards that we see in the movies.  They just protect us from getting hurt or killed before our time.  I think that God also send angels to us for special occasions.  A little bit like a special assignment case when we are about to get ourselves into some seriously big trouble that’s just too much for the regular guards to handle alone.  Or maybe it’s a case that calls for a special agent due to a situation that the regular guys just aren’t trained to handle.
I also believe that God also uses people for some of these special assignment cases.  Why pull an angel away from somewhere else, or from Heaven; if He can just use one of the people that are already here?  Sometimes God can use other people in our lives to fill in as an angel in our lives when we need them the most.  You know those times when a friend gives you something, or unexpectedly does something for you, at exactly the moment you need it.  Have you ever said, or had someone say to you “Oh, you are an angel!  Thank you so much for this!”  Well, that’s it exactly.  They are an angel sent by God at that moment.  They may not realize it, but God has used them to be your angel.
For me, one of those people is the pastor at my church.  Pastor Henry has helped me in more ways than one person deserves from another.  Some days I really would feel lost without him.  A few weeks ago; before the holidays, I decided on a Christmas gift.  I really wanted to give him something special.  It was a collection of four small glass angel ornaments with touches of gold trim.  I thought it was very appropriate considering how I felt about our friendship; and all that he’s done for me.  The collection, was a beautiful set; but I looked at them and thought “it’s not enoughIt needs to be more personal.  Maybe I should buy something else.”  I thought about it for a while, and decided that I would write a poem to go with the angel collection; to tell him how much he helps me and how much I appreciate it.

I've written a lot since I discovered my talent for writing words and my love of the craft.  However, I had never in my life attempted poetry.  I had absolutely no idea if I could do it at all.  I sat down one evening after dinner to write a poem for Pastor Henry.  For several hours, I dribbled many words and phrases onto my keyboard; but nothing that made sense.  I tried writing something funny, then something serious, something that rhymed, and something that didn’t.  After a lot of frustration; and even more laughter at what I was writing; I decided that poetry obviously was not my gift!  But it was still bothering me.  I needed to see this through to the end one way or the other, or it would make me crazy.  I don’t like leaving things unfinished.  So, I prayed about it, and suddenly the words started to come together and they made sense.  At about midnight, that night, I finished this poem.  Let me know what you think.
Angels from Heaven
by Carley Cooper

A stranger willing to say a prayer,
or a puppy with lots of kisses to share.
A friend who loves enough to sit in silence,
and a pastor with an endless patience.
All are angels sent from Heaven,
to help those like me that’s for certain.

This fancy package that comes from my heart,
is especially for you with my thanks to impart.
Four little angels are contained within,
each a characteristic of our friendship akin.
Lectures, advice, and guidance you extend;
my angel, my pastor, my counsellor, my friend.

I had planned on going to the church office the next morning, a few days before Christmas, to fulfill my own little tradition of taking in the huge gift basket filled with lots of homemade Christmas treats to the staff.  I do this because I love all those in the church office so much for all the work that they do for the church, for Jesus and for me.  I figured it was the perfect time to deliver Pastor Henry’s Christmas gift.

So, I delivered it right on schedule.  I walked into his office with a big smile and a very cheery “Merry Christmas!”  I gave him the gift and said that he could choose to wait and open it at Christmas, but I really was hoping to see his reaction.  I sat down.  He opened it.  He read it.  Then he said something like "Wow, that's nice.  Thanks".

Hmmm!  It wasn't quite the response that I had hoped for.  I really had expected a little more enthusiasm.  So, I sat and looked at him for a few seconds, waiting for something more.   Then he responded with "I'm not going to look at you because if I do, I'll cry".  HA!  I knew it!  He was very touched by it; which made me very happy.

Oh, and just for backup I also gave him a batch of deviled eggs... one of his favorite treats!  My Grandmother told me “A way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”.  Granted, Nanny meant it in terms of finding a husband; but I figured that I could apply that theory to this situation as well; just in case the poem wasn’t a hit.

The reason that angels come in all shapes and sizes like people, is because sometimes they are the people!

~~ Dear God ~~    Your works and Your ways are more than we could ever hope to comprehend.  Thank You for those that You put in our lives, in our paths; that help save us and guide us in Your direction.  Please use me to be someone’s angel so that I may help them in the same way that others have helped me.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Wanna go for a Tin Roof Sundae?

I have had another blog for about 3 years now where I write about all sorts of things.  It is one that is shared with my healthy living / weight loss community.  I get very good response from it among the members there.  As a matter of fact, just recently, I was voted, by other members, to be a Motivational Member.  It is very exciting for me.  I am so very honored by this and the overwhelming support that they give me.  It is this support that inspires me to keep writing.

I so very much enjoy writing and sharing with these people.  However, it is rather limited. I wanted a place I can write about other things that are not necessarily devotional messages, yet be a more public forum.  So, I have launched another blog website.  I view it like it is bits and bites of fun and curious things that you might find in an ice cream sundae!  I hope that you will just want to dig in and see what the next spoonful will hold for you.

The new blog site is called Tin Roof Sundae.  You can also sign up to follow by email on that site, as you can here on Worship Melodies.  Pleaseeee.... leave me some comments.  The feedback is very motivational for me.

So grab some sprinkles, your chocolate sauce and a spoon; we're about to have some fun together!
